hehe, i just edited some bits of php. Search the phpbb forums for bot protection, there are a few threads about that.
Problem is that as soon as something becomes standard, the bots will be changed to circumvent that standard protection.

Just throw in a simple captcha that asks "Are you a bot".

We did this on the vbulletin board I admin, worked like a charm.
