Hi, I am really new to mapping. I have the height and metal maps down, but I have no idea how to make the texture map. I've read all the tuts but I still don't understand. A step by step guide would be much apprecieated.

Well, you have a few choices.
L3DT, under Forboding's tutorial.
Experimentation with other applications.
Hand-work.
I use L3DT, then move on to hand-work.

I'll not give you a step by step guide but this is how I texture.
create an image with your heightfeild, the image is a texture the size of your height feild. You use color range selections to select out levels of greyness. This selection is used in a layer mask. That layer also has a patern overlay. So you get a bit of prebaked texture splatting... god I ache for sm3.. anyway yeah, that is what I do in photoshop. The map GRTS Rivervalley is my work:

Start by reading the tutorial, if you don't understand a particular part, ask your question here. Then start with something small and see if it will compile and load in Spring. If that doesn't work tell us what you exactly what you did and we will help you some more.

Seriously is "mother's mapconv" still the tool of choice around here? Wasn't everyone going to switch over to the "New New Map Format"... Oh my poor Wiki, I weep for you...
