Spring Tower Defense

I've been looking into this and it all seems very possible, especially with the next releases' updates to LUA in Spring.

I'm still playing tower defense maps for Warcraft III, but memory leaks (units aren't "recycled" in their engine, a new one is created each time you build it, so memory leaks are quite common late-game when there is lots of spam) really hinder the playability...does anyone know if this will be a problem in spring?

Desyncs will be something else altogether

OMG I want this so bad. I have actually been thinking of starting a project to the same end.

I'd suggest using units from different mods for different levels.

The Problem is, it will be a bitch to balance. But if I could play Wintermaul Wars in Spring, I would be a very happy man.

Anyway, when the next Spring comes out, I'll be glad to do some helping with this.

Would be awesome to play tower d-fenz in spring.

1k fleas for 1st round!

if the mod creators allow it, i'd mix the units from the mods.
that would make it fun.

Wouldn't suggest gundam - there's only two turrets in the mod (if I recall correctly)

I suggest SimBase.

Please new models. Because in TDs you can upgrade the towers. And then you need more than one type of a "tower".

part of the fun of triggermaps like TD is that you see units in new roles.
so mix all mods so we can build EE's miniguns to shoot XTA peewees and use Gundam walls to block 1944's tanks!

Yes

I recommend that you do a lot of tests first, add a tower, test, add an upgrade, test, so you know when and if you made a mistake.

There's this NOTA mission that's kinda like tower defense except it's more non-silly.

Definitely do it as Starship troopers (movie version, not book version), so we can hole up against an endless tide of bugs... :D

That being said arm/core would probably be received better and be easier to do.

First context I've seen where I'd prefer the movie to the book :P

Get WC3, play proper TD.

WC3 TD, while probably complexer than Spring TD will ever get, has sucky explosions and no physics simulation. Therefore Spring TD would be more fun. :)

I'd recommend staying away from non-free content (like TA).

Or you could do a Tower Defence on Hoth, where the Rebels have to hold out against an onslaught of Imperial units...

;)

Well then, to make this a reality - why don't ye' all assemble a team right now and start work once 75b1 is out? :P.

I've been trying to do this :

Model/Script/Wutevar : Peet

Fbi monkey : Me

LUA Bois :

Quantum
TheFatController

Design Doc :

Maybe boirunner? (need someone who's experienced w/ Tower-dfens rly :P.)

I think once you got the basic stuff down (especially the Lua) the units can be plugged into it easily, possibly with small stats changes to make them ramp up in power like a proper TD should.

Oooh, ive played alot of wc3 TD in my days..

Just some gripes:
The grid system really helped out in the placement of towers, i fear blocking will be quite common :/

Use flying builders. For great justice.

Make really flashy fx for the bigger towers, when you see one of those babies go off you know someones gonna get red on them. Take care on the polycount a lot there though, theres bound to be a lot of the biggest towers in the endgame which in wc3 often leads to lagfests.

make the towers interesting. Chain lightning, slow (this is probably the most important attribute), monkeylord style beam, use the dgun button on the bigger towers.

A spellbringer is a nice twist too: A building with LUA'd mana that can cast global spells, (ala the orbital bombardment thingah by imbaczek) which can help you clear your creeps (or the enemys towers ).

EDIT: yeah the creeps themselves are really to be done last if this will develop anything like a wc3 TD
