Garbage in one end, power, fuel, and a ceramic substance out the other. :-)

Finaly a pure machine of SIENCE. The ones you see in videogames.

Seen that. Oh the oil companies would sooo not like it.

Takes more Engery then is delivered. Much more.

Also has the nasty Habit of even burning up the Oven...

Sorry, there was a Article in a German Newspayper called the SPIEGEL about that - and the bankrupt of one of this plasma burning facilitys..

But still a cool way to get rid of really toxic Waste - i wish it could burn Atomic Waste into nothingness...

Yes and no. It actually depends on what you put in it- if you just feed it old copper pipes, it's not going to produce any fuel at all. If you feed it all organic waste, it'll produce quite a bit.

Also, this depends on how efficient your collector and refiner for the fuel is... like the article says, these plants have been around for a while, and the old ones aren't very good about processing the gaseous products. That's sort of what's impresive about the one featured in the article - not that the technology exist, but that its efficient enough to sustain itself on muncipal waste.

No real awesomeness is that they can now convert... it was something to do with beer... to something ... else. Go to hell.

I got this issue a while ago... and I thought it was cool just because it was a place to get rid of all our crap. :p It isn't the fusion reactor but it can help solve waste storage woes.

Isn't it a bit scary breaking down the molecular structure of things in causing them to form totally different molecules? There's only a limited amount of any given substance on earth... it's a bit sketchy to just turn it all into glass with a big grin on our faces...

We already recombine atoms into different molecules like it's nobody's business. Every time you burn something, you do that. Even when you sit down, your body does just that. So does the tree outside your house right now.

Really, the only legitimate worry is destroying all the universe's matter with antimatter.

When you burn hydrogen and oxygen they form H2O. They're the same atoms and elements and molecules but in a different arrangement and with new bonds etc.

This is a basic chemical reaction.

However ripping the electrons off of the Hydrogen and oxygen atoms to temporarily form a plasma, can change the very nature of those atoms, and the end result is that those are notthe same atoms.

They are not the same thing.

In the mean time I think the billions of anti-particles passing through your body should prove little comfort for your fear of antimatter, valued at $1 trillion per g, and atoms composed of which rarely seen for more than brief milliseconds at a time in particle accelerators. Just think, trillions of particles are passing through you each second, many reacting with your body in ways you cant control.

I can control them. You there, that atom, next time a particle passes through you, do stuff all :P

But while you were saying that other trillion of particles pierced your stomach! :)

I think any reaction can be reversed. Problem is that we may only discover how to reverse a action milleniuns after discovering how to do it... :)

You cant undo the reaction like you can unfold that piece of origama youve spent hours on. Rather you recombine via a different reaction. It can be returned to the original state just not the exact same electrons and configuration. Common sense really.

Most atoms don't have the exact same electrons and configuration now that they did one second ago, so I don't see how that's relevant.

Its more relevant than your snipe.

Running current through a wire moves electrons around too. As does rubbing your feet on the carpet, creating what we know as static electricity. Yes, when you move, you are ripping electrons off atoms, which you then discharge onto something else, adding eletrons to atoms. When you eat, you are moving electrons around. Plasma is simply the state where all matter becomes like a metal, allowing its electrons to move freely. Oh, and lightning already creates plasma.

Along with burning, smaller static electrical discharges, and accidental microwaving of metal objects.
