New Map: Two Basins v1

Hi Guys,
I've created my first map - and it took me so long it may be my only map :)
It's a fairly straight forward map, meant to be played top vs bottom.
I created the height map using The GIMP and the texture using Povray.
It has a "ribbon" of metal that goes across the middle of the map and hopefully the "MaxMetal" is set so that the ribbon does give toooo much metal.
Cheers.

looks very nice, gameplay might be a little on the porcy side though...

I dont see why, the sandy bit is a valid path for attack as well by the looks of it.

Your heightmap could use a bit of blurring.

I dunno, I really like the deliberately pointy mountains, they look a bit cartoony and work really well with the color scheme used.

I recommend a few more expansion areas for players on the sides, and reducing the metal content of the ribbon. It's a little too "all or nothing" for my taste. What I mean is that there is nowhere else to which players on the sides can expand - you have to get the ribbon or you're dead. The mountains near the ribbon are shaped in such a way that shared control isn't likely, meaning one team or the other gets the whole thing.
Some players may enjoy that kind of all-or-nothing game. Personally, though, I like maps which offer a glimmer of hope to those who fail in the first skirmish of the game.

I'd not seen Settlers 1 before so I googled it after seeing your response and you do have a point

It gave me a chuckle. See:

I was worried that teams could end up porcing in each basin, but I haven't had enough chance to play test it yet to be sure. I was hoping that the fact that if you tried to porc inside the basin then the other team could just shoot down on you from the sides...

Were you refering to the mountains raphie, the map as a whole, or some other parts? I've got the height map saved as a multi-layered GIMP image still with the different parts of the map saved as different layers so I could blur just one layer.

Do you think I should break up the ribbon and spread it around the basins?
