As the length of a discussion approaches infinity, the probability of someone trolling or derailing the thread approaches one.

As the length of a discussion approaches infinity, the probability of anything that is possible happening approaches one.
For example, as the length of a discussion approaches infinity, the probability of smoth admitting that he is a furry approaches one.

It annoys me that threads that derails have to be locked. Because it means that whenever you disagree with a fine thread, all you have to do is to troll flame it, and it'll get locked, despite whatever great content of previous posters. Imo it would be better if the thread was split, all spammy trollish flame would moved to some remote corner of the forum, (if not deleted when they're outright contentless), and only the relevant comment kept in original thread, which that way it could be rerailed.
And what's with today spamming of GD? Move it to OT please!
And bah that corally of Godwin's law and as old as the law itself, you can't call it an update.

I did the above on Caydr's forum.

It is quite possible for the probability of statement X being made will approach a fixed number between 0 and 1 as the length of the conversation approaches infinity. At least theoretically anyway. Just need a statement that becomes less and less likely, as long as the reduction in probability is 'fast enough'.
Maybe the statement 'I'm locking this thread while it is still short' would be a reasonable candidate.

You're right, I'm wrong, hooray calculus.
I meant to say that the probability of any event
with a fixed probability of happening between 0 and 1 in any one post approaches one as the length of a thread approaches infinity.

Thats what I personally do first, but once all useful stuff has been discussed and there's only trolling left it's time for the lock.

Ironically it is almost always the people reacting to trolls that start flaming and get the thread locked

If you have a brilliant thread end and there's nothing left to discuss and a small flame war sparks off, you should still split, otherwise you destroy the original thread and nobody learns because its been marked as a troll thread.
Also unforeseene vents may occur to bring the topic back from the dead.

Or you could just leave it be.
It would be less work on the mods and certain peoples' extended full-length reactions to one-sentence barbs are rather hilarious and are often worth more than the rest of the thread.

Felix, that may be your opinion but one of your one sentence barbs is quite insulting to these people and these people react so strongly because they've had so many of these barbs targetted at them that they're over stressed, very annoyed, and quite frankly, its bullying, and its a violation of the forum rules.
If you like those sorts of things and your really do believe that is a valid reason, I believe this is not the forum for you.

...OR you could not take yourself as seriously and respond with a quip and a smile. That's what successful people do. (Successful people in all walks of life, mind you; not just iDrama.)

I note that the guy's name is "ZergZergLOL".
I also note that two of the main people defending him are Lolsquad_Steven and Isach, also a Lolsquad person.
Is ZergZergLOL in your clan/community/group/lolsquad? Is that why you're defending him? Does Lolsquad condone this sort of behavior?
Just curious, if so I'll go ahead and add all of "Lolsquad" to my "blacklist".

I have matured since then. At that time I was ignorant; the light of lulz had not yet entered my heathen heart. Indeed, it pains me greatly to see the many sins committed by my previous self.
Bu I have acknowledged my previous ways of un-Slack and have repented most laboriously. I have been born again through the grace of Most Holy "Bob" and have been anointed with the oil of lulz. I now go forth to spread the good news of the Most Holy "Bob" and the Way of Slack.
All Hail Eris! et cetera.
