oh, there is teamcolour on the s44 units (or a fair few at least) just the chances of you seeing it unless you are counting the pixels on the tank (mainly the shermans, and some of the buildings) are slim to nil.

that being said, im not using TC at all. ill do somethign with lua later :)

and yes smoth, i was making the point about consistency of colour. ideally every unit on a given team would have an identical shade of teamcolour on it (once lighting is taken into account)

ps: screw you Mozilla, coloUr is the correct spelling!

yeah but s44 is resultantly only really playable with icons. teamcolour should be considered essential imo, especially with all the lua methods of discerning your team creating lualag and looking a bit ugly

Rather than adapting the look of your unit you ruin the look of the area around it?

The reason why we haven't gone for a public beta is because our product is in an unfinished state. Not only is the content not yet done, but it is very unpolished. We feel we have a specific advantage in that we are based in the Star Wars universe, and have the ability to attract many people who have never heard of Spring on the Star Wars name alone. However, we believe that we only have one solid chance to kick and scream about this and get the attention of these players - we suspect that if they were to download IW in it's current state, the majority would be turned off by it's lack of many popular units, as well as by its rough balancing, and even rougher state of polish. That's why we have the closed beta sign-up thread on our forums.

I think you should consider (if you havent already) having a separate lobby/client system for IW. Otherwise your game will suffer the same fate as PURE.

People will download the game, join the taspring-master server, poke around for a bit in singleplayer, see there arent any games except BA/CA, and uninstall your game.

Not only do you need a polished game but you also need a polished way to deliver it. Break away from the rest, hell you could even start your own IW Planetwars...

You should set up a dedicated IW client and server system.

No. keep it connected to the rest, it would be a good idea to change the lobby to show all IW games in a special square or something, (keep game up with autohost) but keep it connected to the rest.

Could you explain the reasons behind your point of view? Is it because you dont want to have to run a second lobby when you want to play IW over BA?

I'm telling you...look what happened with pure. Big release with tons of attention on ModDB, 1000s of downloads. Failed as a game though.

If you want to release IW as a GAME and not a MOD you need to separate it from the BA crowds and the main server.

I'm concerned for IW, it looks really good and has a lot of promise, I'd hate to see it sink to the depths of failed spring mods. Make a Starwars skin for the lobby, host a separate server, and release it as a game (when its ready of course).

I can go on forever...lets look at Valve as an example. They've got tons of games all on the same engine. Each game has its own servers and lobby/GUI style, separate from the others.

Maybe what spring really needs is something similar to Steam, in which the players can select an installed spring game and Launch either single or multiplayer.

pure looked neat until you play it.

That killed it imo.

I don't like the idea of breaking away from the community, I have seen an occasional game or two of gundam. Played in a few also. Other shit gets played, not pure all too often but shit gets played. Seriously I was specing a few games this week.

Starwars has a MUCH larger fanbase ESP in the us which is the core of the player base. I believe that if they are strong enough they ought to see some success. Sure there are a lot of BA games but does that really matter? CA gets played, xta gets played etc. You have to realize that starwars is more iconic than TA. So far they have done a fabulous job I have not played it much but I can say that between starwars and pure, I found the starwars experience more enjoyable. Then again, what would I know, I have PLAYED IT.

tl;dr: If gundam of all things can get players, starwars ought to be fine, pure is very gimmicky, seems interesting and is then dull and not fun to play, don't blame BA for pure's shortcomings.

don't blame ba *for being the dominate game* for....

Better now?

seriously, do you want to play ta new guy or starwars, if I were a new guy I would ask, "any jedi" get a NO and be very interested. Then go play gundam, but that is me.

Just saying, pure is not a good example, past argh being the hype machine that he is the game cannot stand on it's legs. I applaud the starwars guys for not hyping and holding off to make a stellar release out of nowhere. It is the way games should be done, I am fucking tired of people hyping shit up to be the new messiah of gaming and then release some half-finished piece of crap(not talking about pure). I also hate when people hype shit up only to play it and see something that is as fun as a box of rocks.

Starwars can stand on it's own feet but WarlordZ is right, they have 1 shot. There are tons of starwars games and if the fans play a very unfinished version of the current incarnation, they will be reluctant to ever try again and furthermore will tell others not to play it.

Yes hopefully these discussions are promoting the developers to think about how they will deliver their game.

I think it would be a lot more professional if the game wasnt hosted, presented, and grouped among other games which are obviously not of the same quality.

For example, on the Games page, EvoRTS is listed right alongside with IW and S44. Now I dont want to start a mod/game flamewar here but EvoRTS is simply not the same caliber of game as IW or s44.

If we dont list mods such as EvoRTS with "professional" games such as IW and S44 are we insulting and limiting the small-time modder? What do you think?

well, I should probably request a split at this point..

yeah, I think it does hurt the overall image of the spring engine. However, one has to consider progress. True that I feel several projects/mods here are lacking at best in quality. I also don't think baby's first mod should really be posting shots of their visual poop on the images page. On the other hand, it is a dangerous line of possible eliteism and even worse could someday represent a more closed feeling community.

It is like the xbox live arcade community games or the early atari carts, everyone can make something and not everything made is worth a shit. It tires people to have to sift through piles of shit to get to a good title.

I think some projects should be in an exalted status. None of the TA mods should just because of the fact that there will be at least 5 mods that look exactly alike and it makes the engine look like TA2. *in before, "my ta mod has this subtle difference*, fuck you they all look the same with the exception of CA. Starwars: IW, S44, Gundam, Pure, and all of Kdr's mini games are very much the sort of images we want. However, of those currently we only have Pure and kdr's minigames released to full degree.

IW, S44 and gundam all of their good content is in production. So we would have the issue we have now of project images that do not reflect the current public releases. SO currently people come to spring expecting graphical treats and get dog biscuits. Which is why I refuse to post any gundam banners/that large frontpage image. All my show off-able crap has not been released. This is an issue.

Also posting early wip shots means that we are representing a product that will change/doesn't exist yet. Lets face it players cry about "BUT IN THE PRERELEASE SHOT THE LASER WAS BLUE."

Thoughts?
