Well I think in some respects the new map format has potential way beyond the current format, and maps can still have high texture diversity, with close up detail that shits all over the current "mainstream" format, the only real limitation I can see with the new format is a lack of controll over erosion effects like you would see on an l3dt render of steep mountains.
Its also good to know the old format will still be around.

Where's the harm in keeping the old map compatibility? Just encourage the new format, stop even thinking about the old format, keep it there but dont develop it further.
As of the maps list, yes, remove old maps and bad ones. There are so many incredibly shitty maps and a few just astonishing incredible masterpieces.

Like Altored Divide?
*this is not an insult, just making a point*

1. Rip Altored Divide heightmap, metalmap and featuremap using AF's exporter.
2. Set up some decent blends using your purtiest textures.
3. sd7 that sheot, release at a whooping 3 or maybe 4mb filesize compared to the old 25mb map.
4. Watch as people start hosting the new version cuz it
1) is cool.
2) is faster for the noobs to dl.
3) better textured, plus they added in a speedmetal(zomgomg!) and metal-free "greenfields" version of it, all in that 3mb .sd7!

Yes, I must admit it.
+1 vote to purge.

Phase out all old maps and format?
Im sorry, but this single phrase can led the mapmakers to stop all work for while...and this not is good
I think it can be discussed in development section for the future.

Warlord Zsinj wrote:To be honest, I think this would be a great way to filter out the crap maps, of which there are several (though I wont name any).
That way, the good maps will be transferred over into the new map format, while the older, shitty ones that noone really plays, but most have on their harddrives for some reason or other, are left behind...
It's very easy to convert shitty maps (just do a shitty port), on the other hand it would takes lots of care and work to properly port the good map. Bad mappers will be able to spit shit even faster with the new map format. Oh, and about the "wiping clean" and "refreshing", if the current format was abandoned, quality mappers who spent time making masterpiece could get really pissed to see all their effort reduced to nothing, so they could leave forever. So no more good maps. And bad & ugly maps can be made much more easily with the NMF, so you'll have lots of those. Is removing the good and keeping the bad really the kind of filter you want?
It's terribly odd, I'm agreeing with everything Forboding Angel said in that thread for once.
Oh, and while I agree it would be nice to have some map ratings, I believe bad maps shouldn't be deleted, but just moved a click away. I mean, so people who needs them can still get them easily, but they aren't displayed on main map page. Hmm, btw, where's the new map host?

No point in endless discussion, it's simply not going to happen.
