The current versions of photoshop support 16bit per channel just fine.
I know it because i have a slide scanner that delivers 4800dpi 48bit tiff files (16*4)

Good news about Photoslop tho... Just do heightmaps in 16-bit-per-channel and save as a RAW... If there is no 16-bit grey mode then see if you can save just one channel as RAW.

Smoth: I did read your post. The funny thing about internet posts, the longer they are the less they are understood in total. The trick is to bullet things off, like you did with the A. B.

IT CAN support it but working with it is another matter... of course it depends on what version you have.
