For some reason I always found humanoid mechs repulsive. Does this game have duck-like mechs? (mechwarrior bipedal walker style)

I would reply with "does gundam" but I know of a few..
No the game doesn't it isn't slow and cumbersome behemoths either, which is also usually a preference about bird mechs...just about everthing runs and zips around except for mobile armors which are bosses

Biked all across town trying to find it, sold out everywhere. I didn't know so many people wanted the game. Or maybe they just got like 3 in my town.
So, Amazon is shipping it to me. Local business has failed me for the last time!

So I've had the game a few days, playing it when I'm not playing Vindictus with a friend, and I have to say... I'm slightly disappointed. I think its more of a culmination of small things that have caused the game to not quite live up to my expectation, admittedly an expectation that has been forming for a while.
Things I do like:
* Graphics look great. The cell-shaded approach was a no-brainer.
* Unicorn Gundam is badass
* Small improvements to returning MS's movesets add as opposed to subtract, from what I've seen.
* The catapult is a great idea
Things I don't like:
* I want a proper Story Mode. The Mission Mode thing from DW Gundam 2 is fine, but I'm not keen on it being the main mode.
* The levels all feel way too similar. Feels like every level is just a random mish mash of enemies for me to kill, with slight differences relying on the placement of the strategic points. I know the DW games can be boiled down to maps of "random" enemies to kill, but at least there was always the somewhat strong backstory telling me why I was killing said random enemies. I want more cutscenes.
* The little things the characters shout are very obnoxious. Why? Because it seems they read from a small script of emotion-based statements. Whats worse, they try to have conversations with these little statements. Its obnoxious, shoddy, and lazy. Again, what happened to cutscenes, or tailored texts?
This being said, I haven't done many of the Story missions (Big Zam kilt me) So I'm hoping things pick up then. I'm enjoying the game, overall, but I'm not really floored by it.

I haven't played as it much, it might be. I do like that it's third charge bazooka attack can now be stacked.

Mini-review:
This is my perspective on dw:g3, it's improvements and how I feel it stands as a new title. I would have posted this earlier but as with all dw games you need to at least beat a few arcs to know how it is. Otherwise you play the first few levels with 4 string combos and think repetitive.
Some vocabulary:
MS: mobile suit, it means mech, like the humanoid kind.
MA: mobile armor. A really big nonhumanoid mech
Improvements over the prior games:
Let's get the obvious stuff out of the way. This title has added many characters and removed a small handful.
Characters/suits removed:
Quess pariah - suit see gyunei, MA was good and a fun thing to fight, they should not have removed it.
Gyunei gus - was a pretty meh character with a meh MS
Johnny ridden - kinda sucks as he was a personal favorite
Levels:
all of the old levels are gone! - this was fing stupid. The levels could have been slightly retooled to work with the new system. Why this was not done confounds me! I am especially pissed about no more odessa!
The new levels - The new levels are smaller and make an unneeded effort
The goal system - The new levels have little goals which directly effect the battle. It is neat and adds to the game esp the elevators but you as a player quickly find ways to exploit it so you never loose due to losing HQ.
Voice options:
they have re added the support for japanese or english voices. Not that it matters, the translations for the shouting and crap are pretty spot on largely.

The feel of the MS:
largely ms are even more dash and shoot. I generally play one of the less frequented play styles.. as in, I like to shoot more that melee. So to me the new dashing system offends my UC sensibilities but makes for some fun gameplay. Largely it seems UC MS are focused on being more duel oriented than most of the au which largely focus on aoe. Obviously, this is not true for say Ggundam suits or the GPO2.
The suits do handle a bit better and the shooting has been enhanced with suits like heavyarms or tallgeese.
The ms movesets were filled out, giving both areal musous and dash combos to all grunt suits!
several ms were given full main character movesets!
The new characters bring REALLY different movesets.. the guncannon is fun as hell!
Visuals
The new cell shading is nice. what? did you expect more? it is nice
the camera is sometimes too close to the characters and this is more problematic due to all the unneeded slopes they added between rooms making hallway fights sometimes unnecessarily difficult.
the ui is cluttered imo. it is spaced about 10% away from the screen edges. that sucks bad meaning that 20% on top and bottom is being taken up by hud. You learn to ignore it but it is vexing at first.
My conclusion is that despite the removal of the old levels, the character and ms additions easily make this the best one yet. If they had the old levels, I would even get rid of the first 2. Also, people koei did listen. the boards were filled with bitching about no deathscythe. we got it. People in america love tallgeese, we got it. People wanted more turn a, we got sochie heim. People wanted a few more grunt suits not from uc, WE GOT IT. KOEI IS LISTENING!
I'd talk about the new lives system but I don't want to. DEAL WITH IT.
My perspective of the game outside of comparing it to dw:g2.
I am a fighting game junkie so my perspective comes from that....
a bit about the reviews:
people argue that the title is stale and dull. Many of those same reviewers give the recent street fighters praise for how exciting it is. Unless you live by an arcade(which is where fighting games are the best) you are stuck in online hell trying to poorly time special moves in lag soup. Don't want to do that? grind through 8 characters with a crachindo boss who is most of the time hax(doa streetfighter mortal kombat). This game has me dying to grunts, taking massive damage from troops piling on me or being ripped apart by missile fire! EXCITING STUFF.
But but the moves are repetitive, mmkay you must not play many fighting games or fps. Even with the "freedom" in a fighting game you are often locked into specific bests of combo strings. Don't argue about story either, we have never had a fighting game with a good story.. ok that part with helena in doa4 was neat but still. This coming from a guy who used to main testament in guilty gear.
The game starts out slow. you have a few characters and limited movesets by the time you understand the catapults and priorities of targets you are usually middle of the road on a character(level 20-30). A lot of the redundant slashing that people complain about doesn't exist thanks to chain explode. If you play smart you can annihilate and entire field in 1 shot.
The story is necessarily hackish. A bunch of warriors from different times and universes are thrown together in some wierd place for reasons unknown. Old hatreds, new alliances and circumstances result in different teams throughout the story. Your decisions have little influence on this. Despite this oddly throw together gumbo, the character interactions are believable if you know who they are and their stories. This may put people off but lets face it, you are not playing this if you are not a fan of one of these series.
Multiplayer was a disappointment. It is neat to play with people online and maybe it is just my connection but the battle is not synced. You think you are fighting something and it dies giving someone else the kill. Bad show koei! BAD SHOW. This could have been a huge deal for this game, instead it is just a way to fast grind for money.
Overall the game is pretty fun, different ms have very different movesets with a few having similar movesets. I really enjoy the grunt ms for the challenge they add to the game. The lead MS mostly gundams have the best and most effective movesets but that isn't always what you want to use, this allows you to ramp the difficulty any time you want to or drastically change the gameplay and element which I feel is not spoken about enough. Like beating someone with one arm tied behind your back, so fun.
I really don't find it any more repetitive than the pile of roam the world and bring x to Y quests you guys call zelda or gta. Nor did I find it as bland as the menagerie of samey fps we have shoved on us what? every quarter now? Don't even get me started on how people lap up madden every year or need for speed still sells.

I think considering what I am seeing out there in the industry, dw:g3 is run of the mill. between all the cod102312 and madden(currentyear) I don't think the hatred it receives is justified.
As a fan of gundam there are key things I really wish this game did and as a programer who does this spring crap in my spare time I rage over what I would do if I could to this game. Believe me, I really wish I had some way to influence koei. I really do. Largely I am not the community voice they are getting what they want oddly enough.

Yeah I know what you mean. Been following the Warriors games since DW3 and I've had plenty of "What were you thinking KOEI!?" moments.
I only hope that for the next one, they put more of the Mobile Fighters in! I want to burn grunts with Dragon Gundam!

I just don't understand, because of all the Gundam universes, G Gundam's fits the DW gamestyle the most perfectly. But oh well. We'll probably get like Chibodee and Sai Saici in DW gundam 4, and then George and Argo in 5

it is because Ggundam's designs are the campiest. Even in the fighting games like gundam vs gundam they don't use them. If you look closely they are re-purposing old and
new models. oh look kapool, tallgeese and suddenly we get them in dw gundam. However, the 00 s2 ms were new so maybe! I definitely see that they modeled spiegel and suddenly this game we get schwartz.. I suspect that is coming.
some people have had that complain to. "it has ps2 graphics" bla blah. Yeah it does use models that were on the ps2. Models that you could only have 4 of at a time on screen. Now we have 100s. just saying some people should go get fucked..
but anyway.
