Note that I mentioned light bouncing; lightbouncing from indirect sources - most especially atmospheric sources - is more likely to effect the object then the surface receiving shade. Again, obviously relative surface brightness, etc, has an effect.
Lightbouncing does diffuse shadows, which is beyond the scope of Spring. But still, I think you are wrong that the shadows are too dark. In my opinion, they are too light, and the reason why units seem 'copy pasted'.
