Well who watches anime for the plot. A lot of it is enjoyable regardless of plot. Oh you forgot to mention the embarassing situations which appear in almost every anime series. That's it what makes them fun to watch for me... and the supersized giant robots as well of course... (or scifi anime in general)

lol, I abolutely
despise and hate "embarasing situation humour". I much prefer satire and wit, though slapstic can sometimes make me laugh as well.
This does of course explain why I dislike so many anime series, despite being anime fan

Me too - but only if i can`t understand it (smart Guy all of the sudden can`t handle even the smallest Affair). It is some kind of Gamer Disease - i just can`t stand Movies anymore, were People behave Stupid... it`s really like some kind of horror, if you can not controll your char in such a Sit and help him. In a Game embarrasment is a good reason to proofQuest that you Char is good for something. In a Movie - it all of the suddenly expected to be funny...

Same here.
I also hate the mentality that giant robots are for some reason a good idea. Sure, sending in a 12m large machine that costs more than an entire tank platoon is a good idea when the enemy has cannons that can blow you away at 20km and uses vehicles that are designed to be easily put behind cover and disguised better (probably even equipped with better armor). Those giant mechs may be better at close combat ranges but in vehicular combat you're dead long before you got that close. Never mind airborne combat where they somehow smash jets with their hands when any smart jet pilot will have turned away before getting closer than 10km (since air-to-air missiles can easily cover twice that distance) and jets are MUCH faster than a clumsy and heavy machine attached to a jet engine.
To quote the comment on the air strike card of the Battletech cardgame: "Kings of the battlefield? From up here 'mechs are nothing but targets." Except they are nothing but targets from the ground, too. You can miss a half hidden tank but you sure as hell aren't going to miss a 12m tall machine that cannot take cover.

My least favoert animes happen to be about giant robots, while conversly my most favoret animes are as not about giant robots as its possible to be.
However my favoret 'american' cartoon, Exo-Squad has power armor thats about 3 meters tall, and is far more practical. My only complaint is the plot is serious, but its in a saturday morning cartoon for some completely bizzare reason, and if it was remade as a more 'serious' cartoon, then i think it would be totally the best ever of anything...in general.

My favourite - Crest of the Stars - Features Epic Space Battles- but more important is the diplomatic Messes... Legendary the President of a Conquered Planet Quote - they are always that frustrated that the Abh not care about the Ground Worlds they conquer...

...where heroes always enter each battle as the weaker combatant and leave as the stronger because they had some important revelation about their ability just before they were almost killed...
AMEN
Also extremely popular is "oh you think you're good? Take this, you who is clearly inferior! I shall use a weak attack, turn my back on you, and let you die slowly! Haw haw haw! While you're dying, since it will make your death so much sweeter to me, I'll fill you in on my life story and meticulously detail my evil scheme! ... time passes ... several cutscenes ... *main character has sudden moment of inspiration wherein he frees himself from the trap using all he has left of his long lost [relative and/or associate], a [safety pin, hair clip, or other innocuous fashion accessory which may or may not in fact be a living entity], obtains his weapon from the incompetent guards, and is suddenly stronger than ever before* HYAAAA!!!"
...Until next week, when he finds out it was all just a trick to make him reveal his
TRUE POWER, so that it can be used to further the evil genius' scheme!
And who can forget the classic, "Hmph, not bad...
FOR A WEAKLING!! HAW HAW HAW!!!!" that every evil character says immediately after effortlessly deflecting the main character's most powerful attack?
Or, *EXTREME CLOSE UP* "Now I'll have to kill you." *switch to main character EXTREME CLOSE UP, and he narrows his eyes and furrows his brow, signifying his newfound determination*

Ranma › is the best Anime. Funny and with a good bit of fighting and romance mixed together in a crazy way.

The thing I must stress about this is...this is true. Depressingly true. The same way that most of American T.V is dominated by "Swap my wife for a psycokiller" reality T.V shows. That doesn't mean EVERY anime is that bad, or EVERY American T.V show is bad.
Battle Star Galactica the remake, anyone? That show is boss. I suppose the closest thing to BSG in Anime would be Elfin Lied (But I have only seen three Animes. Evengelion, Hellsing and Elfin Lied. Cut me some slack, you bastards!). Elfin Lied is disturbing, unconventional...bloody. Very oh so very bloody. And nary a over done fight scene in the entire thing!
So if you haven't seen it...WATCH IT! Tell me when you're done going through the several emotions one feels while watching a show of this nature. I think it goes shock, disgust, hilarity, sadness, shock, hilarity, sadness, hilarity, shock, disgust, hilarity, shock, disgust, disgust, sadness, the end!
Also...anyone else think Shingi is a pansy? Or am I crazy?

That's very true, though it may have more to do with whats available to us non Japs rather than teen anime dominating Japanese airwaves.
Well either way I thoroughly research any anime I intend to watch, and as a result I haven't been dissapointed for a little while.

You're bringing up Elfen Lied way too often. On another forum the people called it pretty clicheed (the "Humans are the real monsters" clichee which I have to agree is pretty commonplace).
If you like cuteness and violence in one series try Dai Mahou Touge (it's listed on
AnimeSuki, for example), that's just psycho. I think it can be summed up pretty well by saying it's about a magical girl whose transformation spell is "Kill them all!". Her mascot is a vietnam veteran and her hobby is breaking every joint in a person's body.

I'm just a rabid fan. Like some kind of slavering monstrosity, I am compelled by my fandom to bring it up as OFTEN AS POSSIBLE!
I'll try to be good, but I'm drawing from a very very small pool of examples.

Zoombie the more you say elfen lied, the more I feel like finding a copy and setting it on fire, from what Ive heard about this anime it sounds like an overly violent, lets suggest humans are inhuman and make them the bad guys type retarded anti war plot that the japanese are always spewing about..
They get nuked twice and then they gotta go around preaching their anti war, anti violence, comment and the fundamental violence of humanity and so forth in all their animes..
If I realize the fundamental cruelty and violence of humans Ill go watch a movie on the holocaust, I dont need retarded girls with psychic powers ripping spec ops forces in half to see that..
Ive also lost count of the number of movies/anime/cartoons/whathave you, where the high elite, well equpied and trained and armored, special forces team, is killed by the most mundane retarded things like girls with psychic powers or zombies.. or what have you..

If you want a Anime were the Elite kills psychotic Girls - watch Jin Roh :)

If I made an anime where that happened, it would be short, because the Spec Ops guys would win, and there would be no more zombies.
At least it'd be realistic.

Anti-war message? The Japanese interpret their own Constitution in a skewed manner to allow for certain self defense agencies and manipulate their non-military status to avoid unnecessary spending in that department. There are cultural issues with War, but this is expressed through all or even a majority of anime.
As for the concept of inhumanity, I could go on for hours on that. It is a construct - all behaviours we can engage in are human, molded by our own grossly imperfect societal constructs.
I myself have been working on some scripts, and looking into some unreleased content from Japan (As well as important writers elsewhere - for mediums rangng from music to film.)
Let us simply say that I would like some of my works to be animated and directed in Japan as "Anime" but they would be completely unlike the shows that traditionally make it to our shores. You must remember that as Capitalists we cater to the interests of the producer - hence the exaggerated presence of overtly perverse and overly simple forms of entertainment imported from other nations. We are the derivative nation, the lowest common denominator that can potentially consume anything.
