If you are happy with the current state of the game you can consider each patch as a free bonus.
Spring is free but imagine how it would suck having to wait for 1.0 to be able to play it? I think it is a good concept for small game making teams, ie http://www.lfs.net uses it too.
Do not play minecraft but it seems for just 10Ôé¼ you get a fairly complete game...

I treat Minecraft a bit like Zelda, go out, explore dungeons and kill nasty monsters. Use your skill to melee creepers to death.

Ya, Join the team liquid forums, PM serejai for whitelist access, find the thread and read the rules, but also the IP of the server is in the first post. The server is going through a refresh for beta right now and is slated to be up again for July 1st, so if you PM for whitelist now, you should be ok to access the server on the day it goes live again.

Java means you can play it in your browser the same as on your desktop, which is pretty awesome TBH.

The community it attracts actually ranges from psychotic to very casual (my 11 year old niece), and it's a fun game to play even single-player. In fact, I've barely touched the multiplayer since it's barely functional.

He's up to about 1 million sales now, and his continued livelihood depends on the game continuing to sell. On the other hand, Cortex Command I've never heard of and therefore doesn't exist.

All that said, buying Minecraft right now isn't really something I'd recommend anyway. Multiplayer is broken and I imagine it will be the most enjoyable aspect. A $5 difference in price is hardly an incentive to ruin your impression of what will probably be a much more ossum game a year from now.
