Iggy? I know I'm just probably just playing into the conservatives' propaganda, but I see him as a guy who apparently hasn't even lived here for much of his adult life and that's when I stop caring. I'm not normally very nationalistic, but in my eyes someone that's too good for his own country up until he gets the chance to rule it is not the sort of person I want having that kind of power.

I didn't follow politics too much when Cretien was in power, I was too young for it to mean anything.

As for Layton, he got out-played by Iggy on the confidence vote issue, I don't think he has enough support left to be relevant. He's in an incredibly tight spot, support the PM or force an election. Every time he supports the PM he's showing hypocrisy, for obvious reasons, and further weakening his base for when the election does arrive. He needs to step down, he got checkmated and now he's just in the way.

I seriously doubt that. Here's the election as I see it, in a nutshell. First, barring divine intervention, the republicans just weren't going to win - they had the Bush taint. So it became a race between the democrats (I belive Jon Stewart phrased it differently), and it was simply a matter of who could play to the democrat base the best. It was an arms race of economic recovery plans. Somewhere along the way it was decided, probably by the news media, that stimulus was the hottest topic. Obama promised the moon and 72 virgins for every able-bodied man, woman, and child. Hillary heard this and said that it was impossible, prompting Obama to look at her like a disappointed stepfather, and recite his campaign slogan. He wins.

Post-election he actually followed through, regardless of what the smart people surrounding him said. That kind of decision I can respect - for all the wrong reasons of course, but keeping promises is, to me, more important than results. This is especially the case when corruption and lying are increasingly becoming par for the course. It's like a flight computer that insists the mountain it's flying you into doesn't exist. I would salute that computer at the last instant for at least having the balls to stick to its guns.

And now, politics being what it is, all the democrats are just singing the party line. If you think that's crazy, check out the number of republicans who recently voted "no" on regulations which would make gangrape more legally troublesome for government contractors. Reason and reality be damned, politicians will do what the party bigwigs tell them to, or else risk losing their position.

Similarly, I think Obama really thought he was the best candidate so he did what his campaign planners said would win him the election. If he didn't make crazy promises, someone else would have. Now he's merely following through on the ridiculous promises that got him elected, which I can't fault. Bush got re-elected for a second term, so I don't really hold him at fault for doing more of the same.

They're all playing the game, that's all there is to it. Obama's walking a tightrope and seems to be erring on the side of keeping promises and being honest, you can't expect a lot more.

Heh, if that's a promise kept it's one of very few.

Case in point: http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/promises/
(disclaimer, I have no idea of the affiliation of that site. I saw in the corner that it said "st. petersburg times", so I assume it's a newspaper.)
