Again, I do not wish to say Europe is better. I think all are almost as bad .

#1 the us did pressure the communists all around the borders of the communist empires including armed resistance...
#2 US did not give the Soviets half of Europe.
It saved half of Europe from the Soviets.
#3 when the 2 armies met the soviets had several million troops on standby.
Sure,the US had an atomic bomb and the soviet troops were exhausted but what would they do?nuke Europe?

The comment was about Europe 'doing nothing' to the germans shortly before WWII....

1 - europeans also fought when the germans attacked. And the some, also the russians.

2 - probably, still that is not doing something.

I do not know what US could do, I do not know what 'europe' could do. Even now people get killed in a lot of places, but they are 'liberated' mostly if the country has some nice natural resource .

So, my opinion is that US is not an (ideal) knight, out to do good, for the sake of good. It just do what is it's best interest, and that's normal.

Of course..but a democratic country is,at least to some extant,the country of all of the people living in it so maybe you can say that if a lot of people in the us think they are in iraq to liberate it and want to liberate it than to some extant that is the purpose of the war...

I think like in all cases it is a mix of a lot of things both selfish and unselfish reasons.

There are voices claiming the Allies, notably the Americans, could have rushed to Berlin before the Soviets did, and hence prevent the whole East Germany thing (what would instead have happened is up for debate, for all we know it could've led to a bloody extension of the war). Patton's armies, after liberating France, were itching to rush into Germany, but he was held back by the supreme commander (Eisenhower, IIRC?) and Montgomery, who both wanted to form a unified from with the American (Patton) and British (Montgomery) armies. This led to a delay of (IIRC) several weeks, which allowed the Soviets to capture Berlin and "liberate" almost half of Germany before they met the Allied advance.

I guess it is walking through the city, seeing the Walls, some errected by the Roman Empire, which nationbuilded there - before the middle age returned, taking every effort of them to hold back the (Terrorist) Barbarians with it.. which makes me the lazy european elitiest i am...

Let┬┤s face it, our democratic values are not that deep down in our hearts - hell even the right to have cheap fuel for our cars is more important to us. So lets stop pretending, we have a mission, are anything better or have something to contribute to the world.
