a good idea for icons is to have say, circles for land, semi circles for sea and triangles for air, all in one of three sizes dependant on level. metal extractors as a square with a M in, energy sources as a square with E in, factories with an icon of a factory, commanders as the signature of the side (GD or URC). just ideas

And don't forget upside down semi-circles for submarines.

I disagree with the whole E and M in a square thing as its hard to see as you zoom out which defeats the point of them in the first place.

A power symbol would be much better for energy, and a mini mex symbol taking the general shape of the mex would be nice.

seriously the square thing works, check xta, even on the minimap its clear :)

BS, I've never been able to make them out at any distance that I couldnt make out the mex model. At some distances even the solar colelctor and mexes themselves are clearer than the squares with letters in that replace them.

Yeah I think you need some high contrast stuff else you need big, and i like my current motif I dont particularly care for supcoms icons the half circle and so forth stuff.. that and their lvl identification system was useless at large zoom at least the beta version was I dont know if they have altered it..

I want ease of use and good visibility (probably not easy to come by)

I just want to add, I use the widget 'CustomIcons' that comes with spring. These icons work very well, even at high zoom lvl's. The pictures are found under '\LuaUI\Icons'.

The only drawback is, that all mobile land units are simply a round dot. So they don't provide any information of the unittechlvl. This is the only thing, that I would expect to be done better by an iconset provided with ee.

I am aware that this is something highly influenced by personal flavor :-)

ok, if you can use different colours, it would be pretty easy to just have simple shapes for types of unit with team colour, then inside that shape put in a smaller shape with a white border and different colours inside to denote level/type. Yellow/Orange/Red could be used for level 1/2/3 respectively for units. Green/Blue/Purple for hubs and black/white/brown for mexes/energy/defence.

Of course this would be confusing at first, but you'd get used to it eventually, and it would give a second way to differenciate everything.

Colours given are just a suggestion- Different shades of the same colour would work too (and maybe diff colours for URC/GD too).

I'd just use size to show level, if that were possible.

oh, btw.. this is how unit icons work... they are tinted your teamcolor. the whole thing.

which means unless you have the unit selected it is team colored icons. YAY!

Knorke: Rank isn't an indication of whether someone has played the mod before (unless your mod is BA/XTA) so even star rank people will need the guide often.

what was the consensus on build pictures.. TA style landscape ingame backgrounds.. or keep trying with the unit on stuff..

Do NOT change them. They are the best buildpics in any spring mod I've seen so far. Easy to understand and pretty to look at.

While it is helpful, to be honest that player sounded like he wouldn't have even read your guide. Even if you only ever play XTA you ought to be able to get a basic economy going, and when told that hubs build factories you ought to be able to get some units out.

That guy sounded kinda lame. What was his rank? Was he a one star, or what?

Hurray for OOmiz! Someone who agree's with me! I love the build pics. They lok cool, make sence, and get the f@#!ing job done! Who spends more than five seconds looking at the build pics? Anyone who is spending more time than that is not watching his base enough. And you can also look at the little boxy thing that pops up at the bottem left corner of the screen. That has the name, the cost, the health...everything!

they are initially confusing, but like all buildpics you quickly remember which one means what and then you just relate whatever the picture is to the structure. I could work with diffrent fruit for buildpics tbh so its not really an issue. I do think they are not nooby freindly, but I cant identify why that is... when I think of the EE buildpics its all bright primary colours and grids. alot more atmospheric than other mods but a little more confusing. just a single word of bold white text would help
MEX
ENERGY
M-STORAGE
L-HUB
RADAR
M-TURRET
for structures

ION
LASER
CANNON
R-CANNON
SCOUT
AA
ARTILLERY

but its not much of a problem for anyone competent enough to play spring style games, its just somthing for noobs to blame sucking on tbh
