It's when your elo is in range ~700-2500, a period during which you blame your loses on team.

Veigar is shit tier probably one of the worst AP heroes in game.
Fun to stomp pubs and see your AP skyrocket but pretty useless apart from that.
I would take a good ryze over a veigar anyday.
Malhazar and Annie still trump them both insanely tho.
Also lol wtf 1 hour queue what a joke.

Veigar is a pretty weak laner, the difficulty comes from his mana issues. You want to farm Q but if you do you wont have enough to harass. And farming your Q early game is really all you want. Lately when soloing i've been trying out rushing philo stone and I gotta say it helps out A LOT, followed by a catalyst you're almost impossible to push out of the lane and you can farm Q and harass rather at the same time rather well.
Just before Locket was removed somebody came up with the idea of getting it on Veigar. holy shit that thing was so imba on him. infinite mana bitchez. Yea, too bad its gone :/ I wonder whether Reverie would have a similar effect on him but I wasn't man enough yet to try it out :)
I have a theory that Veigar should be played with a support bot like an AD carry, preferably Soraka so that you have infinite mana and you can farm up your AP with Q safely. Tried it a few times, worked well. Can't say whether its THE way to go with him imo.
Lategame is pretty much a beast, and a good counterpick to AP heavy teams. But he is just as effective against squishie ranged AD champs, turning every teamfight in a 4v5 instantly. AoE stun on a 12 (?) sec CD is awesome.
people arguing that early mercs counter the early levels of the stun havent played against good veigars. 1 lvl in E is all you need to hit your W, mercs or no mercs. All you have to do is drop your W first and stun the enemy afterwards. It requires a some skill, precision and practice. once you level up your E though you dont have to bother anymore. With 2.5 secs Veigar has the longest stun in the game that is not an ult.

such a cool champ though; so many possibilities of how to use/combo

It looks like the standard cata rush would work on her. Rylais is really nasty on her, all her spells are AoE so they don't benefit fully though. But the health, ap and extra slow makes her annoying. Good luck killing a RoA + rylais orianna......I suppose a death cap after that and then situation items?

So I am trying to put together a good tank/team support build for gragas. I can only find good AP guides out there so I am building this on my own. I can't decide between frozen heart or randuins though....
My thoughts of this build are: Early catalyst for laning abilities. The cata, along with my passive allow me to stay in lane nearly forever. After the cata I get boots ofcourse, then finish RoA for harassment abilities. Afterwards I build the shroud. If I am still laning at this point I really can lane forever, with the mana regen. Or if we are clustering my allies benefit from the aura. The shroud along with boots of lucidity (and runes) give me A LOT of cooldown reduction early. Aftwards building aegis gives me a hefty amount of resistance and gives my teamates another useful aura. Afterwards is either Banshees or the armor item
I cannot decide randuins or frozen heart because one gives me health and health regen with a handy active; while the other gives me a lot of CDR, a bit or armor and a good (similar to randuins) passive....Any thoughts?

Gragas is not a support or tank. Try AD soraka, similar to what you're trying to do. Except soraka will at least deal damage, you will just sit there.

by support tank I do not mean a healer/sheilder. I mean a tanky champ who helps supports his team via auras. Please don't say your one of those people who think gragas is a caster. I have played him AP, tanky AP, AD and tanky. AP gragas is great at early harrasment, but falls off lategame. I find ad fracas DOMINATES early game, but.falls off way too hard late game. Tanky gragas starts strong and does not drop off.
now lets look at why gragas makes more sense as a tank. His barrel starts off as a strong skill shot with AP, my tanky build starts it strong. If you do not keep up with the AP needed to keep it hurting, it becomes more of an anti melee dps because of its attack speed reduction. it is a mediocre AP skill shot, but a valueble utility regardless of AP.
Now lets look at drunken rage. This is the skill that MAKES gragas. It lets him hit hard without ad items, and also gives him some awesome survivability without building tanky. This may scream make AP on it, but it makes you very very hard to kill when tanky. His body slam scales off of ad and AP. This means when I build an early tanky AP item, and then go into a drunken rage his slam hits VERY hard. Did I mention it slows? this ability let's you escape, suprise attack through a wall, chase and most importantly for tanky gragas, save your allies. Without building tank gragas cannot slam into a teamfight to allow your allies to escape.
gragas ultimate is usefully for its knockback, not mediocre damage. tanky gragas is the best way to play him IMO.

I'm not saying it can't work in some games, I'm saying it's irrational. Gragas is one of the best kiting casters with great survivability / sustain, on par with Nidalee. Tanky / aura build just doesn't exploit his abilities to their fullest potential.
I'm guessing your experience with lack of damage lategame comes from inability to land his skillshots properly. He deals massive damage throughout the game with an AP build, while still being very tanky. RoA, Rylais and Rabadons and you're an uncatchable nuker.

Do you even own gragas?
I play nid too, completely diffeereent cases. nidalee has no utility at all that does not require AP/ad.

Stop complaining about your allies going 6/12 and 0/3 etc.. I had an alistar ban malz after i said i'd take him, then take revive and smite and head off to lane.
