Been playing around actually learning how to use Rhino (thanks for the tips Argh

) This model probably won't make it into the game, atleast not without some considerable remodelling in some areas to cut the tris. Obviously it's nowhere near done and already over 500.

500 aint very bad number :)
I suspect most of it gone to the barrel... can be solved with texturing isn it ?
but I maybe cant be more efficient too... I use more and more poly today

You can remove the muzzle holes in the barrel, that kind of detail is easier achieved with texture, and saves a few polies..
Also you could make the cut-out for the breech a square instead of rounded, also easily shaded by texture to have the appearance of being rounded.

I know perfectly well *how* to cut the polies if need be.

I'm just playing around learning how to use the tools properly. (and I can halve the number of tris on the muzzlebrake by using alpha for the holes and still have the inside bit modelled)
edit: and the barrel is only 60 tris, maestro

What do you use to convert quads to tris, flozi?

I use the Rhino Mesh from NURBS tool properly.

Well the FlaK 38 model I made has like 3000 tris and even 100 of them onscreen doesn't cause much performance loss (with shadows ON)

Yeah, the Soviet 37mm AA gun that I modeled is the same way, pretty poly-intensive but doesn't cause performance loss.

The convert from nurbs tool has to be the most innacurate, frustrating tool I've dealt with before... ever! I think I'll stick with my cubes...

Indeed it is

However, its way more flexible, and accurate to use surfaces(i.e. consider intersections).
~720 tris. Started the trail but it's not quite right.

Good one... looking more and more like the actual war.

Well that's somewhat the point.

Rebuilt the barrel and the bit it sits on. Also rebuilt the breech so it can be properly animated. Rebuilt the trail from scratch, added on the thingies at the side, and now starting to work on how the trail->gunshield and trail->gun are attached

885 tris, but not optimised in some places where it could be. Even so, will probably require quite a bit of game optimisation, but as I have said, that's really not the point of this exercise.
Edit: Out of interest, here is how the 25pdr looked in TACW/AATA:

Why are you doing this?
Try to cut faces as much as possible. For instance, on the right-hand perspective there's a bit of detail on the barrel housing that could probably be removed and done acceptable via textures (I'm talking about where it looks "stepped")
If you wanted, you could also save me the extreme hassle, and import it/heirarchy it into S3O format so I could go ahead and quickly skin it :D

Fun.

And learning the tools.

Nearly done. Nearly. Though I think I'm turning back on my decision against the 3.7" Howitzer and that should be the counterpart to the us M1A1 and the german LeIG18 and the russian whats-i-ma-callit.

how many polies?
