I've been experimenting with a new challenge mode I am trying to nail down - Random Dwarf Fort, AKA Shipwreck Survivor Mode. I randomly generate my dwarves, and randomly generate some items that washed ashore with my ship, and start on the coast of an island, with no immigration (trade optional).
My first shipwreck:
1) Novice Armorsmith, Novice Soaper, Liar
2) Weaver, Proficient Butcher, Hammerdwarf
3) Proficient Record Keeper, Swimmer
4) Competent Bone Carver, Novice Judge of Intent
5) Novice Butcher, Novice Miller
6) Skilled Consoler, Novice Dyer, Glassmaker, Novice Swimmer
7) Proficient Ambusher, Competent Herbalist, Swimmer
I rolled a lot of swimming skill, which is pretty appropriate!
Items:
Tower-cap Log (+3 from the wagon, of course)
Zinc Cage x2
Steel low boot
Dwarven Ale x5
Precious fire opal crown
Steel crossbow
Cheetah meat x5
Steel mace x2
Pinfire Opal
Donkey Meat x5
Obviously, I multiply food and drink by 5 when I roll it on the chart, and I only roll 10 objects, then start doubling the number of random objects until I run out of points.
Not sure how long this fort will last - already gathered all the plants and killed all the local wildlife - I only have a few wild strawberries to start farming with. Don't have enough materials to build a forge, so I think I'm going to have to allow trade if I ever want a pick or axe.
Fortunately I started with at least one murky pool, so my dwarves won't die with nothing to drink but sea water. Still, I can build 4 buildings - a still will be one of them!

Chances of you managing to trade in a island are few: Sea travel is not on yet (Unleash im really lost on the matter), so people from across the sea wont come to trade with you...

Dwarves can get anywhere but some glacier tiles. Other than that, you're right, nothing get's to an island. Sort of the point. I'd shut off all trade if I could, though that gets boring super fast - it's easy to set up food and booze production with plant gathering and the 3 logs the wagon gives you... at that point you have absolutely nothing you can do except wait for years and years until accidents slowly whittle down your 7 dwarves to none. Rather boring to watch.
I think I'm sort of coming to that conclusion - there is very little "almost survived but didn't" and "barely survived" in DF - there is just "OMFG Pwned" and "Totally Fine"

Why dont you try starting in one of those locations filled with dwarf-eating monsters? :)
