Did you bother to read the thread? Vista is fine, there's nothing wrong with it save a few lazy driver makers, notable nvidia, for which I gave a possible cure.

My driver crashes used to occur every 30-40 seconds and sometimes if I was lucky 30-40 minutes, now it's more like 3-4 hours at worst.

Now I know why they crash, I can also say that the lower the framerates the higher the chance of a crash, so 16x AA will give a greater crashrate than 8x AA.

If you're an ATI user, I dunno, go surf the ATI forums, but nvidias sorted now, unless you get BSOD's that is, read the 2 links, fiddle your TdrDelay registry key (defult value is 2, try higher vaues), and please quit the anti-vista rubbish. We had this with windows 98/2000/XP and look what happened there, the vast majority of users use XP despite the doomsday warnings of "its crap" or "the flashy graphics waste all your system resources and slow down all your games", and I'm tired of hearing exactly the same things about Vista, anti-MS users singing from the same hymn-sheet.

The only reasons I can think of to be annoyed with Vista are:

- crappy driver makers being lazy (not vistas fault)
- High price
- The whole court case against MS for miss-advertising PCs as vista ready than handing over Vista basic.
- A lack of solid vulnerabilities in Vista to complain about, with less major bugs than fingers on your hand in the last 6 months(only notable bug atm is the animated cursor exploit which was autopatched days ago)
- Licensing rguements about Virtual machine servers (recently fixed by Microsoft who released 2 new licenses to accomodate this)

As i posted the thing you quoted, i want really serious.

I just cannot see any advantages to migrate to Vista and the I think the Anti-Vista flames or whatever you want to call it are just natural symptoms that appear to the massive promotion.

"Buy the new Windows Vista!" "With the new hypersecure Windows Vista Basic preinstalled -> continue this ad absurdum.

I think, Windows OS's are generally good pieces of software, but Microsofts restrictive policy to keep anything other off and make block normal competition are the things which made their image of Redmond = where the devils toast the innocent souls.

Please dont shoot yourself in the foot, its like saying "My Linux OS has DRM, so we should boycott linux, because I have this CD that has a program on it which runs a DRM routine to decode DVDs when I put ti on my linux PC!"

DRM is necessary as a decoding mechanism. It doesnt run all the time just when your decoding media like DVDs etc, because if it wasnt there you wouldnt be able to play them! You'd just get encrypted garbage! I think you're specifically refering to the secure content path mechanism used for playing Blu-ray and HD DVD media. To which I ask, has anybody ever heard of a single person whose bought a Blue-ray/HD DVD internal drive? I dont know a single person who can play these things (save console owners who got HD DVD support built in or a PS3).

And yah the basic edition of Vista is terrible, anyone whose got any sense would consider the cheapest Vista as Premium not basic.

DRM isn't necessary as a decoding mechanism; it is necessary as a mechanism to make you give your monies to big companies by restricting you in your freedom unless you pay them.

Its necessary todecode DRM protcted content.

The bad guy with rgards to DRM isnt MS, its the people who produce th DRM content to begin with.

But I'm a little annoyed at MS for not resisting them.

If MS did resist them they'd stand to loose masses of money, and at the same time loose support for numerous essential file formats. No to mention many users who expect to be able to play their DRM protected content.

WIndows has such a domininating position, linux is (sadly) poor at multimedia and macs are for rich cowards thinking of buying something different.

nobody can force microsoft to integrate drm shit, if the hollyshit boyz then boycott windows for not having drm, WHO THE HELL SHOULD BUY AND PLAY THEIR DVDs AND BLU SHIT and HD SHIT????

The thing is:
Microsoft wouldnt loose money if not integrating drm, they wouldnt get MASSES of money.

even steve jobs recognized that drm is full of phail and some guys from the industry had to admit, that it is the fault of the industry by having 20year old bussiness models instead of blaming the consumers for everything the industry messed up.

Well after reading this, I wont support such stupid misfeatures by buying Vista.

The DRM stuff is ONLY activated when you put in a HD DVD or BluRay disk, and then ONLY if the disk tells it to. For the disk to "legally" play, the hardware and software must have DRM.

Currently, none of the disks tell their players to activate DRM. Hopefully, they won't ever.

Microsoft claims that they had to include DRM support in Vista so that people wouldn't be forced to participate in illegal activities. (:roll:)

But it would have been nice if MS had just stuck it to the media companies and not programmed anything to do with DRM in Windows Vista. Then DRM would have much less momentum, discouraging hardware companies from building it into their products, and hopefully eventually forcing the media companies to relent.

That way I penalize the media companies instead of Microsoft.

I have vista on a laptop and it works fine with spring.

I was under the impression Microsoft released Vista under obligation to the law where they have to release a new OS version every 4 years.

In fact I know thats true and have seen Vista in action, not too impressed save a smoother interface. It seems to run alot of games slower.

With the support XP already has and the patches and drivers available why would you cause yourself trouble upgrading to Vista, until at least a year to when Microsoft SHOULD have released it bugfree.

I've messed around with Vista a bit. It's alright, and I like how it took the Searchlight idea from OS X (not bashing, I honestly like that). Vast improvement over the current search.


It *does* however appear to be quite the little resource and RAM hog. Note that this was on a friend's laptop. =P

It really does just seem to be a very slightly "upgraded" XP, so no, I don't run Vista. That, and even certain new titles/relatively new titles hate Vista, Phantasy Star Universe and, ironically, EVE Online being two of them, Spring being a third in certain cases, apparently.

E-O and PSU are my bread and butter for MMOs. =P
