That it exits without an error message is a known bug. The cause of the exit is another story as far as I know.

I mean power. Not enough power is going to the card. Either check your computer's powersource (the mains, usually) or check if the card is in correctly, trying taking it out and putting it back (possible connection problem)
Note that that's a theory

Why would DirectX be crashing a game that doesn't use DirectX for much? (Might be mistaken here though)
4. It's not related to the video card
Well. Your computer only crashes during graphic intensive tasks. Why the hell are you ruling the video card out? Doesn't make sense to me.
Say, does CPU intensive processes also crash?

It was initially ruled out because it was happening for other people with different cards
Read a few more of posts. DirectX has been ruled out and at the moment it is being considered a graphic card issue - not enough power going to it, probably a connection issue.

Nope.

i still get these random quits.
i use an nvidia gforce 6800LE with newest detonator 91.31. these quits occour since 1 or 2 months, i think.
this could be caused by the new spring release or nvidias 91.31 driver. do any ati-owners have this "quit-problem without error messge" too??

Yah I do, I use an ATI Radeon 9600 128mb, late enough drivers, and just got randomly exited from a game

I have this problem as well, it mainly happens when the game is just beginning. My theory is that it's a problem with lack of video card memory (i.e. when memory runs out). Usually this problem is resolved for me after a reboot, but it comes back after using the computer for a while. It would be nice if the developers added some debugging features to log what is going on when things like these crashes happen.

I dont know what to do - but it makes Spring unplayable for me.

My brother's PC (AMD athalon 2800+ (2ghz), with a radeon 9550 256mb (effectively a 96/97/9800 which has failed & disabled texture/vertex piplines it also has a dual display capability, and has never caused problems) used to do what the lot of you seem to describe.
It sounds like a software problem/conflict (though based on everyone's descriptions the cause/solution may be diffrent for everyone).
I know that spring used to load and run, then crash for any number of reasons that windows didn't feel it was important to tell me. Reciently I deleted my spring folder, and installed it from scratch.
That had the effect of making the AIs "work" (NTai just crashes, AAi works fine without catch AI exceptions on anyways).
My brother's PC also liked to get windows kernel panics sometimes (of the BAD_POOL_CALLER HALT variety), it seemed to happen most after a restart from a spring "half Blue screen" freeze. A "half blue screen" freeze is odd (and I'm sure unique to me), its where windows would blank the screen to the windows kernel panic blue, but not load any text (so it gets "halfway" to a full kernel panic).
Though trial and error, and a stroke of dumb luck, I found that knocking back the systems' ram timings speed a little and turning off USB2 & usb leagacy keyboard support (it makes a USB keyboard appear to the system as a PS2 one) it fixed the weird kernel panics.
The only other thing I can think of that might cause these problems for people that hasn't been mentioned is onboard sound. The funny thing is, all the things that people blame ATI for (playing games then having instability) are just as likely to be being caused by a poorly programmed/designed sound card/sound driver. Onboard sound cards are natorious for being unstable and affecting the rest of the system's stability when its under a heavy load. EG, a friend of mine (who has a very similar machine to my brother's [ after all I built both ], the only real diffrence being his has a non-delux version of the mainboard), was having Half-life 2 crash, repeatedly. He tried everything, defragging, making a temporrary windows installation on a 2nd drive etc. Yet, Hl2 kept crashing. I went over, disabled the onboard sound and put in an old PCI sound blaster and everything was fine (sure the sound didn't sound as sharp anymore, as the PCI soundblaster is probably 10 years old, but it was playable.
Beyond all of those things, I'd then venture to guess that you are using advanced features of the engine, 3d trees, clouds, reflectiveness, shadows. I know I use a very basic set of options (except for terrain markings) and everything is fine.
I should also mention that my brother's PC is running windows 2000, NOT XP (which is what I assume all of you are running).

Hmmm. Question - what AI's are you guys using? Despite the fact that I was using the LATEST version of NTai, it was still crashing.
I switched to AAI and I havent had a crash since - although a not-so-small and very irritating problem is that AAI doesnt support Spring Gundam.

Drop this in 'aidll/globalai/AAI/cfg' (in you Spring folder).

Hi!
If the Gundan would be the last version, change the filename to..
Gundam_Annihilation_1_0.cfg

One more victim.
I experienced the same problem (game closing), without errors or anything like that. Just like if I hit SHIFT+ESC, except that im not.
The strange thing is that yesterday it was all fine, and today I couldnt do a game until the end. Spring closes at random times (could be after 2 mins of game or 1 hour ...).
Im playing almost only online, so I cant tell if the problem would occur against AI.
Im running a P4 3Ghz with 1Go RAM and a Nvidia GeForce 6600 GT.
I dont have a similar problem running other games. It sometimes happens (rarely enough tough) that they crash, but when it does, I have a windows error message, or its a computer instant reboot, not just back to desktop (or for Spring, back to lobby).
I got the feeling the crash happened right when I hit a key on the keyboard or a mouse button, however this could be just a wrong impression, since you're almost always using keyboard & mouse while playing.
Anyways, afaik nothing particular to mention : happened on various maps, with differents hosts, various number of player, various races & mods ... in action or just building ... dunno.
Help T_T.
Edit / Note: Ah, I forgot to mention another bug I know, it might be linked : sometimes, when I play a map, instead of having its regular terrain textures (grass, rocks, sand ...) its just all red. I mean all red like all red, not like weirdly-colored like in the heightmap mode, or black with spot like in the metal mode. So sometimes the map is all red, and sometime its fine ... happens quite often on Small Supreme Battlefield.

To rule out some theories here:
I also get these random exits, but -
- Other very graphic intense games (like HalfLife2, Battlefield2, Oblivion) run for hours and hours without ever crashing - so lets take the power consumption theory out
- same applies to RAM Timings or heat of CPU or GPU.
- To sum up: these crashes you get are most likely not caused by hardware problems (because evering else runs ultra smooth on my machine)
- next theory: graphic driver As people get these crahshes no mater what drivers (or even videocards) they use - this shutdowns are not solely caused by the graphic driver (still it might be an interaction of driver and TAS)
- it also seems to be independent of what mod I or the other players use
so as far as I can see these leves some probable causes:
- AIs
- TAS core software
- certain maps
- or an interaction of the above

High and Low Redux seems strangely prone to this. Yesterday I played two games on it (FFAs with 10 people) and both of them quit randomly.
Today, I played another FFA. The first time we tried,it quit within about 5 seconds. The second time we tried, it didnt even quit! The survivors stalemated at musta been about two hours of play and everyone got bored and quit.

Yesterday I was hit also by these random quits so I share my experience.
We had 4 computers on a lan. Two computers were identical. One kept crashing the other never crashed.
After some time, someone noticed one of the computer had another user logged in and that other users left some cpu consuming processes (but the game ran ok even with these).
So we decided to reboot and kill anything that wasn't necessary. The game ran fine for hours.
So this could be a race condition... or any other strange interaction between things.

@guessmyname
Spring doesn't even use directx? It uses open formats, hence being able to run it on Linux.

@clericvash
Just as a note DirectX is a set of proprietaries libraries and API-s and not a format.
