They have no access to online gaming at school so that isn't an issue. Good in some ways as that isn't a problem, bad in others as there are loads of awesome free multi-player games we can't access. There are always free versions which are nearly as good or better though!

Not 3D, but might still be interesting: OpenRA.

Games can be made with direct connect (no clue how well that works though), so after installing internet shouldn't be needed. (during installing it will need some of the content from the now freeware C&C and Red Alert games)

While it looks kind of good, the gameplay is in my opinion still missing something. Especially playing against the AI should be alot more interessting then it currently is.
There are also several small quirks that are game stopping but possible a bit annoying.
Once the next spring engine version is released (in some weeks/months), I want to make a stand-alone download that includes everything needed to play: engine, game, map pack, lobby, etc.
So waiting a bit might pay off

This guide was the one I followed to setup the games on our LAN.

Cube 2 the graphics and gameplay isn't that good. Clusterball looks cool, I'm gonna try that one out too.
