I think the major issue with any mind/mood altering addictive substance is that not everyone reacts in the same way.
As an example, some people are prone to alcohol addiction... they are effectively addicted to it before they take their first drink. The same effect is covered in "The Tipping Point" (...which I have mentioned you all should read...) as it relates to cigarettes.
My theory on the weed issue is that people who are prone to be hedonistic slackers, tend to also be prone to using mood elevating drugs... I wonder if anyone has done any studies where they take the top 10% academically of schools population and have them start using weed and see what it does... I'd be curious to see the results.
I happen to be addicted to caffeine and sugar and am prone to psychological self-diagnosis and trying to convince strangers on the internet that I'm smart... does caffeine and sugar make me this way?

It's called being insecure. Lack of awareness, low willpower and other things can be causes.

i remember being addicted to sugar when i was kid... havent got addicted of anything else after i got rid of that addiction... i think i just got more self aware and more willpower once i grew up. Oh and to prove i got more self aware: i also lost all my phobias around that age. Felt like i woke up from a dream kinda. Woke up to reality i guess... after that ive been slitting my wrists.. ha, just kidding.

I got the top 5% in the UK in my High School exams, set my school's record for the result in History (97.5% of potential score).
Your massive generalisation based entirely upon sitting on your arse and hypothesising without research is insulting to me.
Most weed smokers I have encountered are significantly more socially and politically aware and involved than "straight" peers, with alcohol having an obviously greater connection with hedonism in every culture where I have encountered it.
My theory on "the weed issue" (rofl) has a lot to do with the petrochemical industry in America circa 1950, and unquestioning, self righteous drones regurgitating what they are spoon-fed, without the benefit of any direct analysis/empirical evidence. That and alcohol duty.

While I understand your reaction I feel perhaps you have interpreted my points.
First "hedonistic slacker" was being applied to "pot heads as depicted in the media". In other words, the people depicted in the media as "damaged" by pot were in most cases damaged to begin with (this is like the old Dungeons&Dragons makes you crazy because crazy people are drawn to the hobby theory).
Second, the whole thing about experimenting on "academic achievers" was part of the same concept... namely that people who are "academic achievers" would not magically turn into "pot heads as depicted in the media" just because they started using pot.
So... did you misunderstand me or am I now misunderstanding you?

Yes it might be aswell this way around, a substance attracts a certain kind of people.
There are a lot of people who dont like the high of cannabis or who say it doesnt work bla bla etc.
But again this kind of not liking could be because of indoctrination.
(~90% of the things the public knows about cannabis is lies and that a lot of consumers dont know a lot about their drug either doesnt help)

we are talking about physiological addiction, not psychological addiction. Ie: physical withdrawal symptoms.
