Except, of course, the actual Spring icon in / on colors would probably be better, but I'm not so good at pixel art. I have them all in one GIMP .xcf file as layers if anyone wants them.

I was thinking about those colors too ("spectrum" from "infrared as black" to "ultraviolet as white")... but they would be a problem for color blind people so would need some kind of symbolic differentiation/progression as well.

was also thinking "side" progression
circle, '2 sided shape' (like two arches together like a nut), triangle, square, star, star on circle, star on nut, star on square (or pentagon, hexagon, septagon, octogon for last 4)

Oh, you never mentioned the point about simple transparency. No wonder everything is uhm... yeah.

wait what? you said you want awesome looking icons that will look good on other backgrounds than just white, lol that is impossible then. simple alpha just makes them look even uglier, unless you drop that alpha and just accept the fact that transparency isnt going to work.

these are the best so far, but the background box should be removed and there should be added more colors than just 1, i would suggest the first 4 could be silver, and rest gold or something like that.
