IMO just wait for google netbook, maybe it will not look like an iPhone, but at least it has more chance of being useful.

netbook is a different device for different situations.

netbook with a touchscreen, is an iPad with a keyboard. Both are for mobile computing, both can do similar things. One costs 500-800$ the other one claims to be 300$

I personally don't want a Google Netbook.

they are *completely* different devices. anyone know if any laptop/tablet manufacturers are using LED-backlit IPS screens?

The idea of slate design is that you don't need a table/lap to put your portable computer on - you can use it comfortably while standing, walking etc. Netbook is just a cheap, light laptop that isn't too cumbersome in the backpack. It's still a laptop.

Though the form factor does allow you more flexibility in use given sufficient ingenuity and tolerance of risk. For instance, I have used a netbook while bicycling.

I'd say that's debatable. In any case, most tablet PC's have a keyboard and look just like a normal laptop, but can flip the display for slate configuration.

EEE PC T91. And many more expamples of tables with keyboard attached. There are plenty of those which have keyboard fully detachable too, so you can use it as a tablet, or as a netbook.
I have no idea how will google do it, but taken that the OP's tablet is comparable in the functions (mobile OS slapped onto a tablet) mention of the goodle netbook was the worth.
As of the tastes, its up to the people to decide what they want. I personally do not want google os, the first thing that will happen to it is rm -rf / . The thing is that I am unsure if you would be able to reflash this tablet with another OS.

@Teutooni
I would still prefer something stylus-based (and thus, designed with high-resolution UI in mind) than something finger-based.
Stylus-based means you get a Bluetooth keyboard and you've got a desktop computer. Finger-based means you still have inch-tall buttons.
So, anybody know which Google OS they'll put on their pad? Chrome or Android?

pretty sure the iphone os is being updated to support bluetooth keyboards, since apple bluetooth keyboard is listed as compatible now.
stylus means no multitouch :/

honestly, what is the point of multitouch? I have tried to do that on iphone and I found that its just useless for anything but resizing or zooming it. And for those, using scroller or on-screen drag is way more accurate than having to stretch out your fingers.
Have I missed anything about the new buzzword? Does it actually do something useful other than zoom?

I would love to micromanage my army with all 10 fingers. Several cursors, each having their own selection.

That looks cool, but it is not on MAC, and not what is currently done.
Edit : I was surprised to find that most of the stated ideas there are already possible on the conventional touch pads on ubuntu (2 fingers scroll, 3 fingers drag windows, rightclick with 2 fingers, left click with 1, middle click with 3, etc)

That is cool, do want, but what if you get your fingers mixed up your army starts to attack itself?

the major part of 10gui I'm liking is the concept of seeing your finger positions on the screen but still having independent cursors, and the idea of absolute versus relative input.
conventional touch pads can't do it anywhere near as well.

Honestly, you are starting to get limited here by your eyes, not by the number of fingers. Are you seriously able to track 10 points without feedback to your FINGERS? What 10gui looks like is a simple 1-2 mice input, where each mouse has several buttons for different "modes".
Both require you to accomodate, the mice take up much less space on the desk.

a single point on an x/y plane isn't as efficient as multiple points. with a mouse, you have more bandwidth into a concentrated area. with 10gui's huge multitouch surface, you have more bandwidth to the whole screen. absolute positioning also provides more input bandwidth than a mouse's relative positioning.
