seals eat cod and other sea life; as much as i hate the idea of killing the cuddly little guys, they must have their population culled (IIRC, bears and whales eat them, bother of which are fewer in number year by year)
Try and work out why this has become an issue in the past 30 or so years. Hint: commercial fishing is completely unsustainable. Cod is on the brink of extinction.
In 2000, cod was placed on the list of endangered species by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), an international non-governmental organization for the conservation, research and restoration of the natural environment, formerly named the World Wildlife Fund. The WWF issued a report stating that global cod catch had suffered a 70 per cent drop over the last 30 years, and that if this trend continued, the worldÔÇÖs cod stocks would disappear in 15 years
Killing seals because they eat fish is a stupid reason. Also see
the atlantic cod wikipedia article

People eat seal meat, just not necessarily in places where the phrases "soccer mom" or "football mom" are common.
I'm seriously considering sponsoring one of the vegetarians in this thread. If you don't want to kill seals because they eat fish, kill them because they're slow and dumb. Anything that can't outrun a geriatric with a club deserves to die. This includes vegetarians since they would probably run a few seconds then collapse out of lack-of-meat-induced exhaustion.

Any veggies in this thread actually objected to seal clubbing thus far?
I'm loving the vitriolic outpouring against the self righteousness of veggies, which has thus far not manifested. Hypocrisy much?

Killing seals because they eat fish is a stupid reason.
perhaps for you or i, but there are many people in the fisheries business who depend on the cod for their living. yes, the cod has been massively depleted over a long period; that's why fishing is now closely monitored in many different ways.
also iirc, the seals from the seal hunt bring in about 15 million dollars every year, that probably makes up a large part of many peoples salaries in that part of the world.
so yes. killing cute animals is bad. but i doubt it will stop until it stops interfering with people making money.

There's nothing like a steak or deer meat to keep people from being anemic and providing people with needed protein and other nutrients.
The alligator snapping turtle is awesome!

Normally, I ignore these threads, I'm not terribly political.
However, I think that the OP's question is misleading. The question isn't whether to kill
cute animals, the question is whether the EU's ban on this specific animal, which is harvested in certain ways, is just and morally correct.
My thoughts:
1. There isn't a lot of demand for seal-meat, so killing seals is very wasteful from a holistic, "use the entire buffalo" POV.
2. Killing the seals by braining them with a club is rarely a one-hit affair. Nor is it ethically performed:

As a meat-eater who occasionally shoots and eats a rabbit or catches fish, I find this kind of thing rather disgusting, in terms of sheer waste and inhumane treatment of an animal with about as much intelligence as a dog. It has nothing to do with being a vegetarian at all, frankly.

To wind up vegetarians, I always just point at my eye teeth, and say "these are no good for eating plants yo."
the human body and digestive tract was designed to eat anything that would stand still long enough for us to eat it. pre-historic hunters risked their lives to kill dangerous animals to eat and survive, eating meat is part of my cultural heritage!
back to the topic at hand, the european ban on fur from canada is pretty meaningless in this day and age anyway. most people in westernized society (discounting places like northern russia, where sealskin coats are an awesome way to stay alive) wouldnt be caught dead in a real fur coat. but it doesnt make banning it the right thing to do since from memory, in canada, fur seals have to be killed, to keep their populations under control and prevent them from becoming pests (same applies to rabbits and possums btw)
bring on the seal meat plz!

Ban on meat will probably happen in 200 years? 600 years? Maybe sooner, maybe later. On the other hand, bans are usually not 100% effective, see drugs or alcohol prohibition. Still, I think it's very plausible that some development in that direction will happen.
So fear not, you can keep rotting away in your own irrelevance for now.
