It looks pretty poor compared to most PC FPS, but I haven't played it so I can't say for sure.
@SinbadEV
PS3 version, ouch.
Mainly with TF2 in mind, but still generally the PC version of the Orange Box is a lot better than the xbox360 version and miles ahead of the PS3 version.

Deus Ex + The Nameless Mod ftw.
Also, I like Urban Terror a lot.

Deus Ex isn't really an FPS as such more a work of unbridled genius. Nameless mod is taint.
Also STALKER: cool story, amazing setting, cool guns - DEFEAT THE CRAZY SHIT GENERATOR IN THE MIDDLE OF CHERNOBYL. FIGHT BADASSES IN EXOSKELETONS
STALKER > most other games of last few years but on par with CoD 4 in terms of gameplay

Not to start a huge unrelated debate, but perhaps you should try TNM? The lead designer behind Deus Ex (Warren Spector) posted on their forums congratulating them and saying how much he liked it...
Also, Imp, Wulfram is clearly the answer you seek.

I know you were looking for a singleplayer, but for Multiplayer
Tremulous is pretty addictive (if unusual) - and free to boot!
It's the only multiplayer FPS with two sides that really play differently (and is any good), as well.
Edit: spelling

stalker is awesome!
portal is epic obv.
cod4 and fear were fun, too.
but in the meantime, couldn't you just use springs unit control feature? :D
i'm even inclined to recommend thief: dark project, metal age, deadly shadows;
although the first two parts are kind of pain in the eye lately... all of them are some of my favourite games ever.

Google combat arms or operation 7. Both are pretty decent for free online fps games.

If you want a realistic shooter try Armed Assault 2 - it still has some flaws to it though...
Apart from that I have some high hopes for the soon to come
Red Faction 3 (Part 1 still is one of my favorites). There in general are some nice shooters going to be released "soon" like AvP3 for example. Finally something I consider to play in contrast to what was released in the last year(s)...

Whoever told you that was smokin the good shit.
The game was terrible. Even the developers acknowledge it. (I spoke with someone who worked on the game, and he said that it was a disaster even before it was released.)

Is that because he is bulletproof in the game so there's sort of no point playing it or what

Sadly BIS has managed to once again mar a great game by not polishing it before it went out the door...
Give ArmaA 2 a couple months, BIS will see to any problems and the modding community will massively expand gameplay potential.
Be warned though its a MilSim so its realism factor is through the roof.
