Whatever happened to !smurfs?

I think that was the best way to handle the situation, but if I remember correctly, it was dismantled due to privacy concerns.

Also, requirind an email address to register an account? That would do nothing but require another step for newbs to jump through. I personally despise any site or otherwise FREE game that requires email activation. (Requiring an email addy only makes sense if you have to activate through it)

The lobby protocol changed so that it didnt send out everyones IP unless they were hosting a game, and since that command worked by matchign IPs its reliability nose dived.

Also people didnt keep their autohosts upto date and as a result half the autohosts returned error messages.

I thought it was mainly because the database went down or something of that nature. Springie still has the 'tell people you have nat to get their IPs' mode.

Erll yes the API for smurfs eems to have changed several times, and iirc it did go down at some times.

But, I dont run an autohost so Ill take your word for it.

A: We ban open proxies by the list, so finding one that works with spring won't be the most fun you've ever had

B:

That's probably fixable. If you start to play broadcasting a different IP then the lobby received we could easily catch it.

i must have been incredibly lucky then, I did some tests with 20 proxies from different countries and all worked flawlessly, also finding an open proxy automatically is everything but trivial (along with discovering it manually)

so you want a client-side security feature? one could abuse that so easily that he could report anyone to be a smurf including moderators them self

You can't win against the anon on their own playground. Just move on.

How does that work when said "anon" is disrupting the lobby?
