We are suggesting it only for host and players in game. The host would need the players in game to have the map to play. You could have it at the discretion of the host, via a toggle button. If he didn't want to wait, he could just not turn it on. However, due to UF going down, I think many people might turn it on.
If nothing else, it could be a contingency plan.

TBH we just need a maintained UF and some ppl renting a $6.99/mo dreamhost 5 TB bw server, and everything is solved.
Dev time seems more of a problem then bandwidth; dev time is reason UF isn't back up yet after all (AFAIK at least), not bandwidth.
Bandwidth was the issue with FU, but UF solved this succesfully.

What makes you think dev time was the problem?

UF uses only a fraction of its allowed bandwidth. The reason it's not up is because some miscellaneous problem occurred and the admin is simply not here to fix it.

Additionally, UF offloads bandwidth usage to alternitive hosts, so not only does it only use a fraction of it's bandwidth, but it also has other hosts taking up bandwidth costs for it as well.

Seriously? That's it? They used that little bandwidth?

Remember FU went down for going over 1 TB/mo.
I've no reason to believe UF used significantly more (maybe 1.5 or so monthly), and main server of UF is unmetered anyway.

Does anyone know the admins?

Tobi, IF I were able I would try and take care of it but I lack the expertise in that area.
and yes, uf is not having bandwidth issues to the rest of you.

I just got the greatest idea ever...
Why not make a site which just links the downloads?
Then you could still browse all stuff, but you would just notice some links are broken, but still you could be able to download stuff, BECAUSE the linking site doesnt use much bandwidth at all.

There's a script like that on one of the mirrors, I can't remember the url though.

Can't we put UF on a reliable server? one where there are no fires? I'd be willing to chip in with some money.

I highly doubt it was a hardware failure.

well we could rent a server somewhere else and do monthly mirroring of UF (the whole UF site, not just content) on it, to use as a backup when UF is down.

That's basically what UF is. It's content servers aren't attatched to the site directly, cuppy could remove them entirely. It's just that he has the capacity to host content as well as run a portal site, so he chooses to. The problem is that the portal site is down, the content servers are all still up.
