This is one thing that I find very lame... they are scout units (thats what the description says) yet they always get killed before they see anything...

Scouting = Win win win, it's how i usually win. I mean if you don't scout, and the enemy has loads of hidden units coming your way, your totally fucked.

The fact they got killed at all is valuable information

If you are microing your units properly you can typically save a jeff from an llt.

Ya, well that's just sort of the way BA is. The unit roles are whatever noize and day decided they should be, so rather than a jeffy being a "scout" it's really more of a "specialist raider". It's really perfect in it's role the way it does it, but it's not really a scout.
You kind of have to just get used to that playing BA.
[edit] Worth noting, in TiA the jeffy is just a scout outright, it's almost a waste of time trying to use them to kill stuff, it takes forever, however they get by LLT better.

I'll add to this topic that almost half of the players dont build any radars. They build artillery, penetrators and other long range units, and lose majority of those because of few flashes that they cant see until they enter the sight radius. I just watched a game with epochs, banthas and two vulcans on one side, dragging on because no one had a radar to tell them what to shoot.
Scouter apathy is a serious problem, and a major cause of win-impairment.

Every buildline has a legitimate form of scout at every level.
Arm Examples Only
Air1: Peeper
Bot1: Flea
Vec1: Jeffy
Sea1: Skeeter
Hover: Skimmer
Air2: Eagle
Bot2: Infiltrator
Vec2: That Mobile Radar Vehicle with Huge Ass LOS [Usually used with Jammer] [Note: This is a weak scout method and is usually only good for poking around looking for holes on the frontline. However, that LOS is so useful I don't understand why I don't see it used more often anyways.]
Sea2: Moar Skeeter
Seap: The Sonar Plane Unit
Also, L1 radar crawling is useful since radars still have a fairly nice LOS, and are faster to build than cameras.
