Well if you want a story...READ THIS!

http://www.cca.org/cm/picnic.pdf

Translated from the Russian, this is a novel straight from the depths of the Soviet Union! "Roadside Picnic" by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky.

A tale of strangeness and horror, "Roadside Picnic" is about the Zone, an area of the Earth where the laws of reality and physics have been distorted by an alien visitor. Anomolies, strange events that can tear a man limb from limb, send them flying or kill them in any number of bizzare and horrible ways. Anomolies create artifacts, strange devices and odd bobbly things that do even weirder things than Anomolies.

People pay for these artifacts. They pay a lot, even though transporting the artifacts out of the Zone has been forbidden by a goverment crack down. But there are people who enter the Zone. Stalkers, people who sneak into the Zone and sneak out, carrying LOOT. They have to deal with anomolies, millitary patrolls...even other Stalkers who want the loot first.

In this malstrom of violence and terror, Rederick Schuhart, a Stalker, is thrust. Can he survive the Zone and keep himself and his wife, Gretta, sane?

I don't know as I only read the first chapter. But it sure was weird and creepy and neat and awsome!

So check it out.

PS: If this plot line sounds famlier...it should! The book was turned into a movie...and then a vidio game. A vidio game that I've played a whole lot: S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

So read the book and play the game! I haven't found the movie yet...but I will!

Well...I'm off to Chernobyl.

Don't watch the movie. I did, and reckon it was a waste of time. First, it's an old movie, maybe not black & white but it felt like it. And very slow paced.<spoiler>Then, it's the kind of movie where people talk about terrible invisible dangers, where in reality on screen you just have two guys walking in the countryside. You never see any anomalies, strange events, or anything else. Just people walking in abandonned buildings, while talking pseudo-philosophy. The only unnatural effect is when the Stalker's daughter use telekinesis on a glass of water, after the end. Which doesn't serve any purpose story-wise.

But what annoyed me most, was that at the end, when they eventually reach the magical room that grant any wishes, all three go all emo and decide to do nothing. I mean, c'mon, the braved all those supposed danger and are meters away from completing their quest and then they just... have a weeping burst and turn back because some philosophical bullshit dawned on them? As a spectator I was extremely disappointed, plus it's simply not realistic that a human would turn down the opportunity to get a wish granted, right after sacrificing everything for that opportunity.

I guess so-called intellectuals found it very deep, very 42ish, and got thrills from the existencial crisis of the characters, but that sort of stuff just doesn't work with me. I don't want to sound as an anti-intellectual, but I can find way more intelligent messages in a movie about possessed nuns masturbating with candles.

Actually it's three guys not two guys, and they don't have a fancy stroll but carefully ponder each step, and throw some bolts-with-string to prode the area. And one of them actually doesn't want to get a wish, but to destroy the wish-room (as he had rationnalised that if an evil person used it, that evil person could gain too much power), but of course he doesn't, as right after physically fighting to get his bomb back, he changes his mind.</spoiler>

Damn it, Zwzig! Why didn't you post this three days ago so I didn't sit through the movie!

It was really really bad.
