Doesn't antimatter react with any matter on contact? I think in can only travel in a vacuum. Maybe the effect you've drawn should originate from the impact of a projectile carrying antimatter.

edit: oops, I missed that you did mention vacuum...

Srsly, the flamethroweridea has something for it- it surely would be surrounded by oxygen set aflame by imense radiation + electricity. I hate to state, that none of the scifi authors i read, really dug into the physical behaviour of antimatter. Either it appears in space (nearly invisibile, due to lack of contact) and has no physical appearance, bevor it hits solids objects.

And in planetary bombardment, there are always antimatter projectiles (makes sense, if dropped uncontained, it might even float on destroyed air, like dryice on a stove) and THEN a MAGIC WHITE LIGHT APPEARS, hiding everything, especially cause and reason, who would comit treason on the authors not knowing his physicks.

Thus far, the only thing im sure, is tscherenkov-strahlung (blue) and sparkling antimatter partikles following gravity... Please, link me to reference materials, if you know of some.

Anti matter behaves for the most part like normal matter, only for minor differences such as the direction it takes when deflected in a magnetic field

Eitherway I'd expect any weapon like that to simply result in a blinding light at the exit point of the antimatter, and the energy used to contain the antimatter would be better used to destroy the enemy

its mostly very dark blue and black but also shiny and everything near it has its colors inverted and gets sucked in until a equilibrium has been reached. Then both the matter and antimatter disintegrate into energy, bright light and sometimes a little dust.
So with 1 ton of antimatter you can make 1 ton of matter disappear. But of course the resulting energy usually erupts uncontrolled so that the damage is much larger.
You can also supercompress the antimatter in a 1:9001 ratio to make it supereffective.
fact: the canisters on the commanders back contain matter in the right one and antimatter in the left one.

The Problem is with the exit-point- there is not one.. there is a huge magnetic accelerator on a airless moon or planet, and a portal. Out of that portal, the opposit installed into the vehicle.. comes anitimatter at near 5/6 c. So having just a bright light, sounds... like a dirtyworkaround.

You can proppel forward by just using the guns. The wheelz are just for style, everything is improved by adding wheels.

if i imagine anti-matter being fired into the air (towards an enemy), i imagine it would annihilate the air, and thus cause a kind of (maybe weak) implosion effect. if it is dense anti matter, it would suck int more and more air from the surroundings (as air is non-dense), and pull everything around towards it. the problem with the effect of annihilating matter comes, when hitting a unit or other solid object. if you assume that there is enough anti-matter to make up for the whole units matter, you can just delete the unit. if it is a big unit and little anti-matter, you would have to render only part of the unit, which i guess is not possible in practice, or would at least look ugly (as you can not display the internals).

So if it eats air and shits lightening, its theoretically not affected by speed atrition, isnt it? Does Antimatter react to Gravity?

The effect i had in mind was sort of a wireframe meltdown under constant eletric shock. The Turrets and everything above give in, and the electricity charging the unaffected armor slowly melts it into a liquid pool of red iron.

And no scrap (of course) - i also thought about the nearby ground steaming&cooking under the heavy ray bombardment.

I don't care much about the fluff or realism of this, the effect is awesome. It looks exotic enough to be 'sci-fi antimatter' (not to be confused with actual antimatter).

Google for "Gala Bufett" to get your stomage blown to heaven. on those curising ships there are guys in the cookcrew who only seem to cut decorations out of food, fruit and ice. Its absolutly amazing and beyond. Had to steal from some pictures for real.

Time to derail my own thread, unravell my creation. Rant time.

Greg bear. He is great, his books summon great scenarios, force you to imagine the unimaginable, the atmosphere is dense, tensionloaded. Thats why its even worser, when he comes to the finnish - and blows it.

Just take the Forge of God and Anvil of God.
First part of a series is allowed to have a cliffhanger, but by the second part, the stage was set for great fireworx, for some final plottwist that never came. I would have expected something unexpected, the Moms and the ships of the LAW beeing of the same origin as the destructive nanobots for example, basically a revenge clean up crew. Or something similar. But Greg had to take that day of at creative writting. Had to spend a summerday at the lake with his girl, instead of listening to some seniorwriter droning about how important a well written ending is. And so he blows it. Again. And Again. And again. Like a bomb that only emits a weak fart, great sex without orgasm, a theater piece were the deusexmachina drops on the actors, leaving the audience with the feeling of beeing ripped off, after all that effort has went into creating a tremendous world.
I know, this is not nice. But hey, i never mentioned those who were just mediocre, so beeing mentioned negative, is reward enough.

I mean how hard can it be to, lets say put the rotation center of a wheel into the middle of it, right? Wrong. :roll:
