There is almost never a single time when clicking the smooth button works nicely, if you want it smoothed like that, it should be a sub-d model. A nicely placed bevel works better, or texturing the smoothness on works fine, especially with some kind of normal map. It's pretty rough to texture shape into something, but a nice example was the morty's legs that smoth made, IIRC.

Trust smoth to use the smoothing tool correctly :P

Smoth didn't use the smoothing tool! He used the smothing tool!
What are you on, thinking that the almighty Smoth would sink to such a depth so as to use the smoothing tool, rather than forgoing the extra "o" which has caused nothing but pain and misery in its long, letter-ish life?

lol :P ofc that was a joke, i hope i didn't offend you =/ if it would make you feel any better, I'll photoshop a GMN button into the blender ui =P

Well, seems I was wrong, he also modeled it out a bit.

Notice the amazingly subtle yet awesome pre-shading.

A little model made using the stupidest and easiest 3D modeling program.
The tower is based on Cremuss' ships.

CORE airbase obviously.

your texturing beats mine :P

what "stupidest and easiest 3D modeling program" do you mean?

Google Sketchup LOL

sketchup isn't really a 3D modelling program for games though, you won't learn any good habits if you plan to proceed to modelling for games.

Yes I know that. If only all modeling programs would be as simple as sketchup...(minus the lousy texturing feature)

It's easy up to a point, once you progress past that point it's actually far easier to do many things in a decent 3D package then in sketchup.

You just made me remember the "glorious" days of Milkshape 3d.

Did somebody call for an AA ROCKET SHIP?!? (click for bigger image - damn imageshack)

Uv-mapped before exporting. I hate UV mapping. I hate texturing too, come to think of it. :| Comments, critisism, "dood it sux", anyhting?

seems you just started modeling, well, it's not bad, becaus you didn't touch the smooth button, and your mesh is pretty clean  my critism is:

1. Try adding more geometry, currently it does look like a ship, but not much, ships arn't pancakes, they have different parts with diffrent hights
(see images below)

2. try making a real turret, one that... can move (see images below)

3. there's a bit of waste, spring (and most other programs) render stuff in triangles, so, it's best to optimise your mesh for triangles, for example, if you delete the two lines on the deck at the right top of the image, and then connect the vert to the edge, you save some tri's, if you don't understand what I mean, ask me and I'll illustrate it for you.

Images to help you out a bit:

Now, off to texturing and homework :P
