All feature-heavy 3d modelling programs are agonizing to work with. Max is par for the course - but it traditionally has had the best scripting support of the major retail ones, so it's the most popular for gaming. There is better and worse - for example SoftImage is infamously apalling compared to the Max.

What's wrong with 3dsm? A little more explanation here, instead of your usual "I hate it, but I'm not saying why, becouse that doesn't sounds cool" sort of thing.
Yes I'm supporting non-open source programs... (just rarely)

Here's why:
Caydr wrote:Would've had another WIP shot for you just now, with all the UV mapping work complete, but MAX had a brain-fart and forgot all my UV mappings. 8 hours of work.
I learned later that in the version I have, they've implemented a button to disable Max's convenient "forget uv mappings if you edit the model" feature. I wish there was a button labelled "disable all the OTHER stupid shit this program does" too. Max is such a pathetic program. A free app like Wings or Blender completely outdoes it in every meaningful way, yet it costs three thousand dollars.
Caydr wrote:I *do* use wings. I use it for everything. And I've never had any problems, it works perfectly. But wings currently has only very minimal support for UV mapping, which is clearly necessary in models with the detail level I'm working with. So I use MAX. And after 8 hours, whoopsie, there goes all my work because I clicked on something, and without warning nor option it reset all my UV mapping coordinates. So piss on it. I hate this program.
Furthermore, *EVERY* program in existence which has any undo option at all, outside of freaking NOTEPAD, has an undo memory of more than 12 or so steps. And yet max, designed for something which REQUIRES massive, radical experimentation, has no more than a dozen or so. And it doesn't autosave backups, which even WORD does.

The latest version of AA:Spring crashed on me and I looked in the modinfo.tdf's and it has
Depend0=AASpring121.sd7; which should be
Depend0=AASpring122.sd7; I'm guessing.
EDIT: I changed it and now it works

Ah yes, your PC has a "format harddisc" function as well. every program has an exit without save option as well. Be grateful that It's there, or else you need to reset everything manually (if you need to reset it).
As for, "oh for- 3dsm rermoved all UV mapping without me pressing on that button". You were just doing something silly and forgot to same the UV mappings.

Well, It doesn't autosave (logical reason to, but somethimes it is annoying). It does always leave a rescue version of your model behind. (actually the same as an autosave).
Well, it's not like it's the greatest program all time. But it now has an one-and-only feature, s3o exporting. So you're stuck with it. (well you can use obj inport of Upspring, but that doesn't save the tree).

For all interested in playing the "-F" version, there's a small 9 kb patch available here:
http://www.planetannihilation.com/aa/AASpring125aF.zip This will add a new version to your mod selection menu, version 1.25a-F, which has a core anti-nuke silo available to be built.
You should leave the old "AASpring125F.sd7" file intact in your mods directory.

Caydr could you change the name fo the techforg in the next release so ti doesnt share the corlab/armlab unitname in future releases. It'd make ym life balancign NTAI a heck of lot easier, and my code just that bti neater.

Umm... I'll keep that in mind, shouldn't be too hard to do.

Ok, bug repots. Bugs? Anyone? Come on, I need bug reports before I'll have an excuse to do another version with fixed NTAI support in the F variant.

Just bring out a new vesion claiming you've fixed numerous bugs.
edit: ooh, is there a way of turning the keepers off? they deflect your own plasma weapons as well.

no bug report but a question: i dont play aa ta vs humans, just use it to test my ai (aai)
it seems to me that goliaths/bulldogs are too cheap in comparison to their firepower/hitpoints
lev 1 units dont have a chance to kill them but they arent that much cheaper...

Of course lvl1 units are useless against them, you don't throw the equal cost of a tank in infantry at it and expect to win do you?

by Forboding Angel
this isn't xta bruce
and yes a group of goliaths will rip level 1 units a new one.
Can's are your friends.

Cans work well against gollies, Tremors will basically immobilise them, then kill them, paralysers immobilise them so you can kill them with something else, a nice group of mavs does insane damage to them them, reapers that get close do extreme damage....
Enough counters?

im talking about an ai player; it's nearly impossible for any ai to do that
Posted: 06 Dec 2005, 20:15

Just because it's difficult for an ai, doesn't mean it should be changed....

Mavericks, Cans, Reapers, Mumbos... These in numbers will do a fairly decent job of fighting bulldogs and goliaths. Ideally you'd want to back them up with artillery and heavy rockets in order to eliminate them quickly.
Level 1 units will fare poorly against level two units, but in numbers a combination of storms/rockos, thuds/hammers, januses, and especially stumpies/raiders are probably your best bet.
