Those things on the side look like they should carry troops, or if you go a scale up, carry simple little dropship pods that clip on the side and hold lots of infantry.

Yeah, that's sort of what I'm saying.

Imagine you have a bunch of little attachment pods that all look the same, that clip onto those side latches ('dock').

So, the troops live inside the ship, then the ship is deployed to a planet, and the troops all head into those little side pods, which detach and ferry troops down to the planet surface for an invasion. The cool thing here is that you design the pods so that they look cool when attached to the ship. I'm thinking maybe cylinders laying on their side?

Invasion site, Xenon commander (alien race) the 3 round holes around it are gravity manipulators, allowing it to fly!, not completely done yet, the tube in the middle will be a missile launcher

but why would i want edges to be hard in my model? becaus it has to look round
