No one has any motivation to turn anything into a new spring user friendly place and springinfo is about as close as it's going to get and no one wants any part of maintaining it, including myself. I could easily just take it down. I don't need to be paying for it anyway.

However, if I do that it will completely torpedo the news aggregation. maybe that's what people such as yourself want. Nevermind spending a little time adding decent content for users to look over.

To me it seems more like a page where new/potential players should be directed to, so that they do not get lost in the wiki jungle.
iirc that was the original idea at least but i dont know.
Yes, that was the original idea, but no one wanted to help out, which is why I turned the site into a news aggregator that takes care of itself.

The guides and stuff was just crap I hadn't cleaned out yet. All the old content is still there, just hidden. Maybe someone will come along some day and decide they want to actually do something useful.

Springinfo used to see a LOT of traffic from new users. Now it just sees "some".

-------------------------------------------------

You'll notice I tried to make is dead simple for users of this forum to post community news:
http://springrts.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=25907

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If we wanted to, we could aggregate news by using this: http://www.rssmix.com/
In fact, about 2 months ago I was about to take springinfo down and move all news stuff over to an rssmix feed, but for whatever reason I decided to let springinfo stay around till the next time I have to renew the domain name.

So springinfo has a little over a month to live unless someone has a good reason as to why it shouldn't die.

Oh yes, now I remember why i didn't kill the site back then. It was so "peons" such as yourself who don't have real websites could still post news (but really, is it that hard to create an indiedb page?).

Springinfo could have been a very elaborate info site for newbie players, but it only would have become that if I were to drop evo and my life and devote all my free time to it, which wasn't and isn't going to happen.

Please stop assuming such things? srsly wtf.

I tried to contribute some news.
Even did, but formating stuff with this wordpress thing never quite turned out how it should.
For example the "preview text" things on the front page are automatically generated by just taking the beginning of real article and that just does not look nice. Formating is also lost etc.

Also I did not manage to make links in the preview thing clickable:
Image

The whole system is quite complicated, at least it was for me.

embedding videos is broken anyway, which is what my "news" would have been about.

Then I decided to try out this "Community News" (http://springrts.com/phpbb/viewforum.php?f=39) where it says "Want an item in the community news forum? Submit your request here"
and linked the thread with the cool "Spring on a touch screen" thing (http://springrts.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=25865)
This submission thread was just deleted?!

I surely will not write a "Spring blog." But if making a news item was simpler, I would at least take the link to interessting threads, write 2 sentences about it and c&p it into whatever news thing.
Something like:
Huge BAWW! Who is the really behind the downfall of spring? BA, DSD or usfags? Read it all here!

Would not always be really epic stuff but there is some stuff in the forum/"spring universe" that is not visible unless you really look for it.
It surely would help to get the rubber horses off the start page and show visitors that Spring is not (trololo inb4: yet) dead.
Oh yes, now I remember why i didn't kill the site back then. It was so "peons" such as yourself who don't have real websites could still post news (but really, is it that hard to create an indiedb page?).
well thanks for that lol. But I do not make an indiedb page for several reasons.
1) from what i've seen, site sucks. (stupid forced layouts, gallery etc)
2) from what i've seen, community sucks.(admins dont do crap, comments by players(?) make me not want to live on this planet anymore)
3) after a week, i would forgett to check it. (for responding to comments etc)
4) fuck yeah. as of right now, that is enough. ST is not ready for release anyway. I already feel lame enough for spending more time on its page+videos then on working on it.
5) my real webpage. or something  no wait, this one.
Basically the honey badger does not give a fuck because none of that shit is in the spotlight anway and I only needed the webspace for the demonaut map picture thing.

Springinfo could have been a very elaborate info site for newbie players,
yes, that sadly will not work out because of the "spring stuff needs to be updated to be usefull"-effect.
There is http://springrts.com/wiki/Read_Me_First which is still a bit fail but at least people are working on it.
Also all the various install guides to be found on the sites of evo, zerok, ct (probally more, but those have their own guides for sure and want to be able to update it any time they want.)
Maybe someone will come along some day and decide they want to actually do something useful.
The problem with seperate sites (such as springinfo) is that there are hardly enough people to keep the springrts page/wiki up to date.
If I publish a tutorial/whatever on springinfo, realisticly nobody will be able to correct it/add to it/update it. On the wiki, that is possible.
So yea, for some things springinfo is fail, that is just the nature.
It could however work as some archive that you scroll through to find interessting threads, videos or whatever.
If we wanted to, we could aggregate news by using this: http://www.rssmix.com/
I have no clue of this rss news feeds and stuff. Just make anything you can get working, keep it simple and people like me will use it. Yea, basically nobody used springinfo but that was for the reasons written above.
Also do not count on anybody making changes to this forum/site because pretty much everybody who has acsess seems to be MIA.

hm, maybe move the news discussion to http://springrts.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=25907

I counter your image with my own that makes you look really silly.

... What on earth led you to believe that posting a link in the excerpt box was a good idea?

To embed a video from youtube. Go to the video on youtube that you want to embed, click "share", click "embed", copy code provided.

In add post/edit post box, click on html tab, paste embed code. Profit.

The spring video they did not want you to see:

Code: Select all

<iframe width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/EvHj_Bw5pTI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Also, when making a post on springinfo, you can make that post title redirect to wherever you want. For example: Click on "the Spring Video they did not want you to see"

It looked like this:

Yeah I went through and re-embedded the videos. BTW, blame youtube for them not working. They changed their embed codes to html5 and a lot of the old embeds broke (the new embed codes are actually standards compliant now which is awesome).

If you don't see the excerpt box, click on "screen options (on the add new post/edit new post)" page, and put a check in excerpt.

It's auto-hidden by default as of a recent wordpress update.

Also, I can't embed the pure video due to drm:

The wordpress update that hid excerpts is only a month or so old. It's always been there, but if an excerpt is not provided, it uses the first 55 words of a post for the excerpt.

I'm really happy that you to stopped arguing and are now working together to fix problems on both sides.

That's all I wanted to say. :-)

Dont forget spring engine became famous around 2005 2006, with an old mod BA thats a remake of TA, and TA is from 1997,
new pc-s,old players gets married and busy with real life, the new players who comes they never played TA because they are young, and maybe dont know about that rts, games enforces nebs to play other games with better graphics, thats normal.

in 5 years spring can have updates and stuff but it will became old like everything

This happens on all games, the only thing that can make spring alive it is because its open source, but with time there will be more open source games, EA its one company that makes theyr games 80% open source, look at fifa11 u can change all ingame or outgame.
