Only the extractor range multiplier needs to be mod controlled. That would allow different extractor types to come with different ranges. E.g. a very expensive extractor that covers a small area with high output and a cheap extractor that covers a lot of ground but has lower output?

that is a good idea but some maps have metal patches closer then others and that could cause issues.

Leave this to mappers. With the new map format making various versions of maps will cost only a few KB for each version (above the first) as long as it uses all the same files as first one.
This way You could have a SpeedMetalRevision2.sd7 which would be 30KB bigger than current one, but containing 10 versions of this SpeedMetal map. One with 100% of current max metal, a second with 66% (with increased mex radious), 40%, 25%, 15%, 10% and so...
This way the host will simply change the mex properties with 1 click.
AND we dont want all maps turn SpeeDmeTal

the variable thing is not bad idea...
hm.. variable metal distribution?.. based on the original metal map..
i see the mutator "shifted metal" -_-
as long as its not biggie change from original map not bad.
However, not user side selectable, just a "oh different" thing.
Sad sad mappers dont like the new metal system (no patches, but metal veins).that would allow some more flexibility..
hm..
aslo,... default metal layouts could be fitted... like "metal center" (agh) "spread metal" "metal ring.." "no metal"

and the bestest, "metal junk arena"
and yes! we cna have "metal" word on every option...
(oh.. the random maps ..)...

Can someone translate Mongus' post into something coherent?

i think he meant something like a mutator to XTA or any other mod which would ignore metalmap and overwrite it with its own using different shapes of metal output
edit: i still dont like this idea

All of you keep whining about speedmetal. *sigh*
PEOPLE WILL PLAY WHATEVER DAMN MAP THEY WANT HOW THEY WANT!
Who are you to dictate how everyone should play a mod or map?!

LOOK I CAN WRITE IN BOLD CAPS TOO!!. IT MAKES MY POINT THAT MUCH STRONGER!!!
Seriously, don't complain about people complaining thats just plain stupid. The point of the thread is host controllable resouce settings like tidal strength, metal output, metal radius etc.
IMO this is a bad idea, maps are given certain resource layouts to encourage a certain type of behaviour. That said there are some maps out there with nice terrain but not so nice resource settings. If u really wanna play that map try different starting resources or ... something i don't know.

lowering, raising the metal limit is not ok imo.

Umm... The author?
Heaven forbid the creator of a game follows a self-imposed design style...

This is one of a very few suggestions I think would take us in the wrong direction and thus I must disagree with to the best of my ability. This feature has great potential for both damaging game balance and side-tracking the intents of mappers.
If you dislike a map, you don't play it, or you push for change, or you create a newer version.
If you dislike a mod, you don't play it, or you push for change, or you create a mutator, or in extreme cases you create a new mod.
The ability to pull units from a playlist is acceptable because each change is relatively minor. The ability to change all metal spot compositions at once is not, as it's much larger and goes against any and all intents of the mappers.
