Ive never tried A, though I should, F is OK, H is quite cool, and B is just dumb. It wouldn't be the apocalypse if you axed them, but I do play them sometimes when they are hosted.

I don't use them, kind of gotten used to vanilla AA and that's pretty much all I play in Spring. Yeah, pretty "dull" but I enjoy it that way. ;)

I find F really annoying, but it's just the usual annoyance tied to learning a new buildtree. I like B a lot however, and although it's not my thing, H seems fun for people looking to avoid dirty com fighting.

I like the concept behind A, but I haven't played it much. Not sure why.

I've just installed 2.11 and trying the A variant doesn't work, it gives me an "expected further value pair or braces in sidedata.tdf" error.

+1, same here

same, for some reason the 2.11 variants don't work using the 2.1->2.11 patch

The "full" version doesn't work either, there's no difference to the patch version anyway but some dates in the filesystem.

Radar uses energy, as do jammers. Extractors also use a tiny amount, about 3 per tick, I think. That's pretty much it, IIRC.
Well, it's more the plasma cannons that I don't know about (did not know that the L1 laser units used trace energy to fire).

Please don't remove them! I think F is so much more fun than straight AA. We only play F at work and when hosting online I always try to do F games.

I notice a lot of people seem to be very overly reliant on other people. I'm talking specifically about hosting games. Many seem to imply they'd play them more often if they saw anyone hosting.

Why is everyone so dependant on someone else hosting? If there were no games at all hosted, would you just sit in the lobby and not play?

Host a game yourself if there's a variant you want to try. You'd be surprised.

My pipe's too thin and I share it with a WoW player, so hosting isn't really a good idea.

H, F or regular, I join any of those if there's a good map etc.

I havent played (F) because i didnt know what it was until now :P
Occasionally try to convince people to play (H) if theres too much comm rushing going on. (comm death will just make them go "wtf it was comm death? lame" or "i wasnt even watching!" *leaves*

Maybe theyre behind a NAT (typically broadband router) or has something else blocking incoming connections so they cant host. i mean most people are on broadband and only a few enlightened ISP's are giving ip's to each computer on networks connected to teh intarweb with a router (like a couple in finland i think)

I'm behind a router, so I just set myself to DMZ host any time I want to host a game :-)

That's a bit unsafe Soulless1. What's the point of having a firewall if you're just going to disable it? Why not just configure port forwarding instead?

well I just tried it one time after finding I couldn't host, and it worked so I hadn't really tried anything else...still, I make sure to turn it back to normal once I'm done hosting.

I've tried playing the variants, but it crashes :P

I get errors about sidedata.tdf, along with other funky errors like this:

Parse error "brace or further name value pairs expected" in gamdata/SIDEDATA.TDF at line 1032 column 16 near activate=shieldup;

Interesting, yeah? :)

You underestimate how problematic hosting a game can be.

That said, (A) and (H) both appears broken in the newest version, I think both (F) and (H) are interesting variants that should be maintained.

Setting a Windows computer in DMZ is at the top of my list over "cruel things to do to your computer". Well, almost. If you have access to your router, set up port fowarding rather than taking unneeded risks like this.
