I have came to the conclusion that i loose less time and effort not protecting my PC at all since i end up having to reinstall Windows anyway. You see, i used very often known firewalls and anti virus like Norton/Mcafee. Those firewalls were a bitch to manage and the anti virus were godam performance suckers!
- Still, with all that crap, the last time before the last, that i reinstaled my Windows, i was browsing the web with Firefox and one page didn't showed well. Tried with Internet Explorer - bang - virus - atempt to remove it - format!
- Last time i formated my Windows, after that, it was because i installed a demo of a game that came with Starforce and it completely ruined my computer.
You can try all you want! The best you can do is just save yourself the efforts and store energies to ocasional/frequent re-installs.
I use AVG, Firefox and GAIM and alot of patiente (wearing down fast).
Just thinking of that long install to, after finishing, catching a virus from the internet even before you manage to install any anti virus, having to update all the godam drivers, install offices, browsers, configuring XP back from all the shit it comes with, anti virus, firewall, anti-spywares, to hell with that. My laptop ain't even got Windows anymore because i got fed up with that.

Norton is the last thing to put on your PC. It's a huge performance sucker, real crap.
If it comes preinstalled on your pC, you'd be better reinstall Windows altogether.
The programs I've cited aren't and are effective.

I installed Avast, one boot time scan, all the viruses and spyware gone.
It works really well.

I spybot S&D occasionally, and run Firefox and some basic antivirus, but I consider my windows partition to be expendible. Really the only things on it are Spring, Guild Wars, and a few other games I don't play anymore. If anything bad happens, boot back to MacOS and nuke the partition from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

I like Avast, CClearer and Spybot S&D. Also can't forget Diskeeper 10
to defrag the drives.
