split reminds me of okiriver rotated 90 degrees

Not a bad thing but a just a thought.

Ice, why don't you just pick one and do it. Better yet, do them all.

Make n#2 very bright and it'll be brilliant

And yah I miss 2 continents too..

I like maps that look itneresting, and so far your maps ahve been very interesting to look at, as their layout is not extremely simple, you always twist it a little bit..

I like the idea of having several islands with a few major islands which in themselves you cna play on as a land map, say 2 seperated then you have the thing fo who won on the other side of the map, when are they goign to cross over etc......

Split :)

He, but shouldn't you be working on the new GUI? that would be awesome too!

Split, but make it big enough for 4v4 at least, preferably 5v5 8)

Also I agree to Egarwaen, the river shouldn't be crossable by vehicles/kbots, to promote amphibs/hovers somewhat. (And otherwise it would play approximately the same as Okiriver anyway).

First off all im am astounded by the fast and large ammount of replies! Thx for all of them!!

As for what i was thinking myself, Split is the one to do :).

The paths will have some relief indeed. And also as most of you asked for, the river will be esspecially made for hover/amphib.

At first i was thinking of 2vs2, so one can go water and one could go for land. But depending on what mapsize i will choose, you could also have 2 of these players per team, and maybe one air as well.

What size do you think it best? Technically it's easiest if i make it twice as long as wide. So any one like 12x24 ? If i go larger, you should know that the filesize wil increase dramatically (if i make it a 'icexuick' map with alot of different textures in it).

I'll start working on this baby tomorrow. It would be nice if i then have some replies of the desired map size! So help me out.. again :)

If there is anyone who likes to make one of the other map-concepts, feel free to use them, or alter it in your own way!

What size...?
8x16
10x20
12x24
14x28
?

is it going to be East versus West then, or North versus South? Keep in mind that most factories in most mods open southward...

Yeah IMO all maps should be made so that they should be played Left vs Right

i saw this and was in awe : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=58_GruOf ... =hawkvideo

now THAT is a tablet. perhaps a little on the expensive side though...

It's not just that they open southward, it's that the default unit build facing is south. So even if the factory does open north, the unit still has to turn around to get out.

I'd put the sea at the bottom, so you can make the incline in the land part steep in places without obscuring any terrain when viewing from a low angle.

Ice. You are AWESOME :D

And yes, I do think more Oki River-style maps would be nice- so I vote Split! :D

Again, just wanna wathc that resource distribution methinks; if you do have highest reource concerntation somewhere I would say maybe make it in the middle of the water... but leave the land relatively sparse :D

I will see what i do with metal. For now i've just made the first heightmap, and im going to do some testruns. The final metal placing i maybe leave the everyone here, and then choose the best one and make it into the map.

I think the testing and adjustment phase will be quite long, so don't expect a final rendered map anytime soon... It will cost me some days..

i'll let everyone know when there is news on the split map, which now is a horizontal map :)

// ice goes back to work :)

hmmmk how much power do you think i would need to make a 20k x 20k pixel map? cause every time i try and make gimp create a picture that big it just takes a looong time to decide that it is in fact dead.

i have an athlon xp 2800+, 1 gig ram and plenty of disk space (200GB) for the temp files.

well, it's does take a strain on your computer. however, first of all, it only 20x10, and the pixel map (texture) will be 10240x5120 pixels. (52.428.800 pixels in total)

I don't know the exact limits of Photshop (which im using), but i believe it can do a billboard, the size of 15m, so my guess it can go higher.. how Gimp works, i don't know, maybe there is a limit?

This is the same size as MoonQ, and i must say that works quite nice. I can edit, draw and put textures on it in Photoshop (PS), and it all works quite fast. With zooming or srolling i do have some hickups, but the overall speed is fine.

I once did a testrun for a 24x24 map, this slows down significantly, but esspecilly to the fact i loaded a 700+ mb .bmp file in it, and offcourse next to the huge size, this bitmap also gave my computer a hard time.

I have a dual x2 3800, running at 2,4 ghz each. I don't know if PS is optimized for dualcore procs. Probably more important is your RAM and swap file. I have dual channel corsair 2 gb ram and a swap file of 2 gb also. (You can set this manually in the computers properties/permormance menu's.) If this doesn't work, you should do best at buying more ram!

Good luck!

Yea, that map that dosen't exsist yet is excakly like oki river.

Firsly, Oki River has Rivers that go into the land, and 1/3 is full water, 1/3 is river and 1/3 is pure land. Secondly, diffrences in sizes make that map play diffrent.
