May I suggest 1 rule: no swearing :P

Just kidding ;)

Well, yeah, but we're all adults (or near so, anyway). It'd be a problem if someone strung together a fifteen pages long post consisting primarily of swear words and a select number of regular names, but we haven't gotten there yet. ; ) The use of crass words can be used to emphasize a point, as I just did.

Personally, I would reccomend Gnome.

I don't know whether Gnome would ever agree; but he would certainly be on of the most qualified, knowing the engine, being a leader of a major mod, being an admin of FileUniverse, TAUniverse and SupCom Universe as well as being relatively calm and measured (until some people pushed all the wrong buttons, in one thread).

Might also be nice to get a moderator from the OTA end of the spectrum for a bit of balance (again, Gnome would be good here, should he ever agree to it).

No swearing? I've asked many times that certain words be censored, it would help the nubmer of people coming here too since alot of school filtering software see these words and block the whole site.

I dunno about swiftspear, but I shouldn't be judging him on his past record, lets see how he gets on and if all turns out well we won't have a problem.
Let he who is without sin cast the first stone

I don't really feel confortable blocking swearing... This is a comunity based off a teen rated game. I would hope that all our members are mature enough that a bit of potty mouth isn't going to corrupt thier minds. I don't know much about fighting the powers of nazi freedom of speach suppression, but I don't think I'm willing to BE the nazi to do it.

Noize: I'd like to get some official rules in place as well. At the moment I'm just moderating flames in the form of nonconstructive criticsm and personal attacks/insults. However, I also think things like rasism and vulgar shock humor should probably be moderated.

I you have rules, people will argue endlessly about the rules. I recommend that you just trust your good judgement.

It doesn't really matter who the moderators are, so long as they are content to simply moderate. However, all too often I see moderators on forums take their power of moderation as carte blanche to silence any voices with which they disagree. For example, on one forum which I was on, many of the moderators were European liberals, and had a tendency to close any thread in which the American members of the forum advocated reduced gun control because, in the words of the Euroliberals, "this is a stupid discussion, obviously nobody should have guns, LOCKED".

As I was saying. As long as the moderators rule with a light hand, simply locking any threads that actually have flame wars and banning people who come here and spam or post goatse links or whatever, it doesn't matter who the moderators are.

Finally, I do think that it is appropriate to debate the qualifications of persons selected as moderators in public. The moderators are performing a public service, but one in which they are in charge. While the SY clan ultimately owns the site and can do whatever they want, there is an implied bit of democracy inherent in any public forum for discussion of a public topic. Part of this implied bit of democracy is that the members of the forum have the right to voice their opinions on how the forum is run in a constructive manner, without hurling flames, and without having their opinions silenced.

I agree compleatly with felix, someone call me on it ASAP if I start doing that. The one possible acception is that I'm not willing to facilitate racism of any type, so don't even bother if you want an avenue to look down on people.

Well if you're not gonna block certain ludicrously obvious words that will blobk then entire clan-sy.com domain from a network for simply being displayed then I guess I will have to suffer at the hands of the system for longer than I anticipated. I mean I dunno about you but I wouldnt want to see someone calling someone else a *backstabbing c*nt* for example, and I doubt there are any valid sentences other than the above that are in good taste and wouldnt be blocked out by a moderator anyways, or put in a locked thread.

It just seems a little wierd to talk about not censoring things because of it being freespeech yet when they do it they're banned/thread locked/post edited, because it's offensive and is being moderated.

Eitherway when I mena censor I mean the word is changed so you still know what it is but it's garbled, such as f@#* or the example I gave above. The whole point being that those words arent blocked by filters, but the raw words alone are getting blocked by filters. That and the garbled censored versions look so much nicer.

edit:: hmm you could censor commonly misspelt words such as beign/being and replace them with their correct values ^^

I don't personally think swiftspear is a bad guy. I talked to him in tasclient a few days ago (before he became mod), and he seemed like a really decent guy.

Possibly simply misunderstood?

A lot of the time what I say on these forums is taken completely out of context by fellow forumgoers, so I definately understand the misunderstood part. I do occasionally do some things I'm not particularly proud of, but ppl make mistakes. We all have bad says sometimes. As long as they don't keep making the same mistake over again and learn from pervious mistakes... It's all gravy.

AF, I don't have the ability to set up that kind of filter. Zaphod would have to do that. If people are refering to others in the way you described I will edit thier posts, however, I'm not here to protect the interests of people outside of this comunity. If some guy makes a thread in off topic about his local politician or his ex girlfriend I'm not going to be messing with it much unless it becomes a source of conflict between our comunity members.

If i may give you an advice: don't over do it!

The most dificult task about moderating is not the moderation itself but, instead, choosing what to moderate. In this case, more is not necessarily the same as better.

And i also say that it is better to not aim for rules and trust moderators/admins good judgment.

I hate to advertise my self but I could be a decent mod for several reasons:

-I am familiar with this message board format.
-I am a Administrator to TADesigners.com.
-I would like to have a more involved role in the Spring community.

I have never dealt with many blatant flamers but in the past I did have to lock topics and ban some blatant spam bots.

I would appriciate the considderation on Zaphod/Betalord's part.

But Swiftspear would be an excellent evil moderator, good bad cop going there ;) j/k

Noize is also a good choice, but I hope they can manage this type of message board, it can be a little confusing ;)

Moderator on this board isn't very confusing... But zaphod took a little while trying to figure out how to add me to the moderators list if that says anything...

It's funny how I'm the bad cop here where all the other boards I moderate I'm the good cop :P

You guys are just a different breed here. I'm used to hanging out on forums stock full of guys like bruce. Places where hard headedness rules with a iron fist and dramabombs come only in the nuclear variaty. I honestly admire the comrodary and respect I see here on a regular basis. I wish it was easier to catch on to the flow of it.

funny story about froums:

This is my first, and i actualy was dumb enough to think "wow the internet is nicer then i was told"

Then i tried a few other forums. And everyone was a jerk! and what do you know, i came back here and lived happly ever after.

But i actualy thing SS is doing a good job...not that there is much for him to do on this forum
