To each his own, I suppose.
The above two posts demonstrate why it is important to have a qualified map reviewer to call the shots if there are going to be widely recognized 'official' balanced maps.

Exactly fiz, you helped demonstrate my point.
BTW for reviewer, I nominate Forbidin. I believe that all of his reviews to date have been very fair and balanced, besides, I like reading them.

My two aims in tourney maps are 1) lower metal than most maps and 2) not rush to the middle, or if it is, not a blatent one that doesn't balance the middle somehow (see Small Divide for a good map with a valuble center)
I can't remember the name offhand, but at least one of the river maps is balanced enough for tourney play.
Anyways, I don't really need many maps; only one map per round. The Cold Place is a solid remake, and so that will be the first round's map.
For the second round, I'm thinking Ashap Plateau, but its still a toss up between several maps, Comet Catcher remake included.
I'll let you know the exact list of maps (and the rounds they'll be played on) when signups are finished.
But, if you're looking for a first round edge, The Cold Place is your map.
Have fun =)

I would suggest that we play on bigger for comm shared games. That way, there are less conflicts between partners and each always has things to do.

I think pathways v3 would be the best map for a 1v1
a)Its symmetrical (correct spelling?)
b)Its metal distribution is very balanced
c)It has varied, flat, and mountainous terrain so challenges the player to use/take higher ground and conduct raids from the hills with kbots, not just on the ground with vehicles-instead of simply spamming flashes to win a'la comet catcher :)
d)Its a perfect size for a good, long gruelling battle
e)You dont necessarily have to control the middle to win
d) It looks cool
f) Size is 20x20 so both players will always have something to do

Just read my post back to myself... god Damn my grammar and spelling is terrible lol
maybe this is a good one for the final? A long game where all techs are used would definately happen on this map. except maybe sea and hover... but when does anyone use that stuff anyway hehe... apart from on a water map... ahem

In AA, I use boats whenever water exists - AA boats are extremely overpowered (and the gunships are pretty destructive as well). I've repeatedly seen a losing team have one player pull water late in the game and dominate the other team very shortly afterwads. I would be very opposed to any water maps (for the AA, not XTA, portion of the tourney).

Well, I feel that The Cold Place is a good balance between land and sea.
In addition, since I'd rather not try to deal with an update mid-tourney, 1.43 will be used throughout. This is where tourney play becomes independant of good balance, ect. If something works, it will be used. Think OTA and flashes/samson swarms. Its not pretty, but it works.
Of course, I suppose the replays that will come from the matches will give a good sense of what the truely competitive AA players use, and thus be useful for balance.
Edit: this does not mean that I like unbalanced games, I'm only trying to make clear that I will not be asking all the players to update to 1.44 (should it come out during the tourney) mid-tournament. It would break any kind of consistancy between matches.

And signups are now CLOSED. I will announce pairings before Monday the 20th. Once you have your pairings, you have until the following Monday to play the matches. Good luck all =)
The map for the first round is The Cold Place.
Edit: Due to complications, the list of dedicated hosters will not be viable this time around. Instead, I only ask that the game be hosted by a non-competitor in the lobby. Once the game is played, please send the replay to me at nemo_nobody (at) walla.com. Or email me there, and I'll give you a place to upload it to =)

The tournament has now started!
The matchups can be found
here
Competitors: these games need to be played before Monday the 27th. I suggest contacting your opponents as soon as possible and setting up a time. Rules for schedules and forfits (and everything else) can be found
here
For those too lazy to click, here's the list:
Team SlekWalker vs
Team TombaHarm
WarC#2 vs
Team MysteryHeze
Team RAF vs
Team NikTure
Team Heron vs
Team 1337Bubben
WarC#1 vs
Team Kafig
Good luck all!
Note: if I don't have a replay for the game, it hasn't happened yet. The Monday the 27th deadline is for the replay to be in my mailbox. I trust all of the competitors, so a replay from any of them is fine. But please, make sure you send me the replay at nemo_nobody (at) walla.com after you play the game, or I can't count it!

why start pos 1 and 5...
1 and 2 are just fine imo...

Nemo, 1 and 5 don´t work unfortunatly. Whatever team you choose, you go to 1 and 2.

Whoops. Excuse me while I kick myself.
Righto then, default start positions it is. I like 1 and 5 because they place the comms on opposite sides of the lake, but 1 and 2 are fine.
Let me go change that on the wiki.

I would prefer 1 and 5 too, actually :D . I think whoever did the port (which is a very nice one) got the starting positions mixed up...
But default positions is Ok as well.

The start positions are faithfull to OTA.

No results yet? i want to watch the
replays!!
edit: oops
These first round matches need to be played before Monday the 27th.
( my maps suggestions: rolling hills, small divide, dueling bases?, dueling forts?, core faf, grassy paradox, core pyramid, green river...)

Rolling Hills, as in the one I made ages ago in about 5 minutes, that has just one repeating texture, and is really quite boring? I have never seen anyone play that...
