ok after taking some hard looks in game I have decided to rerender it at 1 to 1 ratio. It will be tiled heavily (as I like to use tiles anyway) and much more detailed. There is a possibility the filesize might shoot up or plummit. Either way. we'll see ;D

W00t! triple post yeah!!!

Anyways, I need some input. I am having one hell of a time getting the new heightmap to look right.

The rock walls are my biggest problem. I want the walls high like that so ships have trouble getting los on the land. However, I dunno if they should be rock or sand. It's driving me crazy. I don't think I've ever had this much trouble with a map texture before.

I spend 8 hours until 3am in the morning trying to get this right yesterday, and here I am the day after and I have gotten nowhere.

I am asking... in the perfect world, how would you guys like this map to look? (BTW I made the beaches look much more natural. After looksing very closely I sided with warlord that they didn't look natural enough.)grrr :(

pls help.

Iam at my wit's end.

forboding... what about some small rocky features?

if you can send me a slice(512,512) I can model a rocky wall and a rocky spire for you.

The cliffs should be rocky, as they are now, and the beaches sandy.

ok good stuff, thanks maelstrom.

I'm having trouble with l3dt now. It seems that it's likes to do this wierd ass oil painting thing with my textures. Goddamn how annoying. I can't figure out how to change it

Also, just a random though I had then:

Try putting a mosaic filter (The one where it turns it all into squares) on the cliffs heightmap. Only have the squares really small, to small to put llt's on, but still there. Dunno what this would look like, but it would be interesting. Just thought id mention it while you were remaking your map.

A test map thing I made with a mosaic'd height map. Looks quite good IMO. The different hill things have different levels of blur on them as well. Top right has no blur, top left has a small blur, bottom right has slightly more blur, and bottom left has a gaussian blur of 4 on it, which makes it completly round.

Try out the effect, its cool.

Its 300 kb. Download it and have a look. Its not playable, its just to look at, so it would only take a minute to see what im showing. Plus screemshots dont properly convey what this looks like. You really have to see it in 3d for it to work.

Map redone. If you don't like it, too bad. I spent every night this week rendering and rerendering, adding features, brushing textures. I'm exhausted. Therefore, you can sit on a log if ya don't like it :-)

If you do... Thanks ;) In that case it makes it worth it.

The new cliff texture is really great. I liked the sandy beaches better personally, but meh. Someone want to post screenies of what it looks like with shadows and reflective water?
