To clarify, the "steam version" is not out of date. If you were simply to join a game in the multiplayer tab, weblobby would have downloaded the engine, game, and map for you automatically.

What steam gives you is only updated once in a while, because all updates are handled through the lobby and independent of steam.
Thanks for this information Forboding Angel! This is a very simple solution indeed, one I couldn't have possibly found myself since I don't fancy multiplayer games. I now have a working (but outdated) Spring but I'll give the Steam/Evo version another try.

Mod abuse much, silentwings? Jesus. As someone embroiled in the discussion, you don't get to make that call. You wait for a third party, not try to intimidate by flexing "mod muscles".

You're pathetic.

@oracle,
No worries, not your fault. Tbh the single player tab ought to be disabled until you have joined an mp game or something.

Actually I think 96 was after the change in commander spawning; the problem was the ancient version of BA.

Thanks hokomoko and nixtux!

I will indeed try to update Spring & the games. It would be very convenient if Spring was automatically updated through the Ubuntu repositories, but I'm downloading the Steam version right now and willing to give Forboding Angel's stunt (updating through a multiplayer game) a chance.

I figure you probably meant that as tongue in cheek, but I just wanted to point out that it's not a stunt, it's quite literally intended to be the way that you get new games/maps/engines.

Ideally it would be seamless. Also don't forget to disable the battle filter in the mp tab. By default it just displays open games with the name "evolution" in the title.

Fine, seems my explanation was not right, and the blame lays with a lack of instructions. Thanks for correcting it.
