TL;DR
in short: if its not cross-platform / open source license, then it sucks.
TASClient isn't cross-platform.
also, i don't really get the "question" of the first post.

You know what you* should do? Create a new lobby client in something like LuaGnome that is cross-platform and uses Lua (which all the game/engine devs have to know about anyways...) and then bring the lobby into the official branch so that it's maintained alongside the engine and lobby server.
*(you = game and engine devs AKA not me)
