Looks like linking all file/dir from /usr/share/games/spring to ~/.spring did the job

spring-mt always takes ~/.spring as default read & write dir

I had the font issue too under gentoo. Only way to get spring-mt to work for me was to put the executable in a portable Linux64 root next to spring and spring-multithreaded. Then all worked, it would keep using the content and settings from ~/.spring.
