all of the *A games: based on 99% on TA (with the biggest differences being which units are available, unit stats and costs etc) evolved like this : OTA -> AA -> BA

tech annihilation (if that is indeed what "greenfields island no wind" is, or the one where you can build the OP missile truck with your commander, i could be wrong): a mutator that adds units to BA

ZK: started as CA, but is now far enough from BA that it can no longer be classified in the same group with it IMO... no tech tree to speak of, completely reworked unit roles, communism teamplay.

Well it is kinda pointless beyond satisfying curiosity. "reason for splitting/what each subsequent update has" is sometimes just one person wanted to make their own version of a ta mod with X unit added or removed and they keep mucking about in notepad altering stats after that. it isn't a lot of research just a bunch of pms and questions to a few people will answer most of it.

some people create new projects rather than mutators. either way is fine, there is no governance on who makes what mutator beyond polite requests by those who run the projects. Generally, if you want to make a mutator most devs will say yes, but do ask first as a polite request.

For me what makes ZK different from a *A is not the "reworked unit roles", as every single *A claims to have reworked unit roles, but that a great deal of work has been poured in ZK into remaking most models, scripts, interface, etc....

*A mods are mostly made by people who can't do much modding beside tweaking the numbers in unit defs.

Other mods are made by people who, in addition to editing FBI, can also code Lua gadget & widget, do 3D models, draw textures, code unit animation, make FX, etc...

z: you're right; i understated the uniqueness of ZK in comparison to *A; cannot at this point be classified in the same set as *A.

contix: no worries man; everyone here has their own game that they favour, just wanting to keep the classification subjective rather than objective hehe

I think that a sticky or a wiki article for each of the different still-played Spring games would be really useful - Heck, I'd write one up myself if people submitted what they want it to say.

I bet that the various creators of said mutators/mods/etc would disagree about their mod. :) Plus, it'd help newcomers figure out what the heck each thing actually is. I still don't really understand differences between the *As. If someone explained that BA includes THIS or THAT comparative to SA or TechA or PA or DA or XA or GA or XXXA or whatever, it might be less confusing.

I meant *A games, considering there are so many.

Also, is it OK for me to edit the wiki? Is it ok to change the description for...say, NOTA, considering that it pretty much describes any *A game? Maybe add a "No-Longer-Updated" section for older versions of things?

you are probably not the best one to say no longer updated. Leave that to the community at large(after all, gundam rts has not been updated with a new release in over a year)

This is why I get confused...I found all of these on Springfiles, some with no description at all. I don't know what's still updated or what is the most updated version. I assume the one that's the most recent, but then again, some have their own website.

But I bet most of them wouldn't even load in current Spring version. The wiki only list those still alive. Or should list, at least.

Part of my point. The reason I suggested a making a thread earlier is so I could get feedback from people on what's in-play right now, and what's so old no one even remembers it.

See, though, Tech Annihilation, for instance, doesn't have it's own subforum. But it's listed on the Wiki page. And it's still under active development...
