Smoothmesh scrolling works like a charm.

Edit: except when using ZK terraforming to create walls. Smoothmesh doesn't get updated.
Edit2: It's not perfect because getting the smoothmesh above the groundpos makes you jump up slightly when beginning the scroll (as I suspected). Not horrible but I left it default off. A tracescreenray for smoothmesh instead of ground position would fix this issue.
