I think I first found spring the the 'buntu repositories about 4 years ago. I had installed feisty on a laptop because I wanted to get some linux savvy, and naturally one of the first things I needed to do was check out the software, especially games. Most of the sucked, but Spring really caught my attention. I played around a lot with the AI but it didn't really keep my attention because I wasn't interested in multiplayer.

Later in my Freshman college year, some people introduced me to Starcraft Brood War. I was living in the honors dorm, so I was rooming with loads of serious nerds, and a few of them were actually quite good and taught me the ropes of competitive RTS. Later I remembered Spring and gave multiplayer a try. Kind of stuck around ever since.
