Somewhere around here I've got a Lua script that marks metal spots. From what I remember, it first scans the map to get an idea of the "average" metal content, then uses that value to find areas of higher than average metal. It starts with a fairly fine scan grid, but switches to bigger steps if it starts finding huge numbers of metal spots. If I remember correctly, it handled metal maps, discrete spots, and smears fairly well, but I never got around to checking placement of actual extractors. I'll see if I can dig it out and post it here just in case there are any good ideas in it that one of you real coders can steal.
